My husband was offered a job that would move our family from DC to Southern California. We have an 11 month old and a 2.5 year old. He could work out of an office in a few different areas - one of them being Orange County. His office would be in Orange. What are some family friendly neighborhoods with good schools within a 30-40 minute commute that we should look at? I like the idea of being closer to the beach. We would need a 4 bed 2 bath house for under $725k. I would love a nice shopping area close by, farmer markets. It would be great if we could walk to some of these things but not an absolute must. I also don't know anyone in the area so family friendly is huge for us. Thanks for your help.

Orange, being pretty central, gives you a lot of options within a 30 mile radius. I would suggest taking a look at Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Orange, and Tustin.

Good beach cities closer to you: Seal Beach, Huntington Beach. Huntington has good & bad areas and I don't know it well enough to know those. I definitely suggest a coastal city since you have the budget for it. More going on, more walkable areas, great climate (if you don't mind the marine layer at times).

How would his commute be from Mission Viejo or some of the towns around there?

It's easy, provided one hits the 5N by approx. 7:05 AM, or so.

I believe beaches are rushy place all over the year, where party goers mostly enjoy their time in those places, i would recommend you to find a place which would good for family specially for toddlers. Anaheim Hills & Tustin can be good choice for good locality within moderate price range.

Im the exact opposite. Im going to DC from OC.

The commute from Mission Viejo (where I live now) to Orange is about 20 miles on 5 north. After 730 probably 45 minutes. Before 730... <30 minutes.
