Welcome to CD.
Many go to the City Data area on information on a specific city and see old posts listed for them to review. They find one that has an interest and post on it.

I don't want to give the impression that home ownership is impossible in Aliso Viejo at the $130K income level.

The overwhelming majority of housing units in AV are attached and there are far more condos/townhouses than SFRs here. There are also a lot of apartments, but that's another story.

With that in mind, someone making $130K could easily find a home (condo/townhouse) to buy in AV, and not have to become a renter, if ownership is preferred.

Check Redfin (Look carefully because many of the listings are actually located in Laguna Hills or Laguna Woods):

The typical knee jerk response on the California forum.
For some the trade off is worth it. I’ve posted a few times running the numbers on the financial, picture of living in metro California versus living elsewhere which would have 90 percent of what California offers.
You could maybe struggle for most of your working life making ends meet, hope you don’t suffer job loss in the next 30 years, and hope you save enough to retire on in California.
Or depending on your situation, the savings is enough out of state that you could have millions set aside and quit working with financial security in 10 years. With that much money saved you could move back to California and retire early.
If you really think living outside of California is that horrible, just think of putting up with it for 10 years and then moving back and enjoying it the rest of your life without any f8nancial stress. Could be worth the trade.

I will add that some people live where they don’t want to for many years going to school for their PhD. I know several college kids from California that went to school out of state and settled outside of California too.
Everyone just needs to look at the big picture.

Some people are also finding AV's trails attractive for electric unicycle offroading:
