CHEAP TOMATOES?
This should make everyone think, be you Democrat, Republican or Independent.

>From a California school teacher - - -

"As you listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration, there are some things that you should be aware of:

I am in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at a large southern California high school which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socioeconomic and income levels.

Most of the schools you are hearing about, South Gate High, Bell Gardens , Huntington Park , etc., where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools.

Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast and free lunch program. When I say free breakfast, I'm not talking a glass of milk and a roll -- but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten.

About 75% or more DO have cell phones. The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having family watch their kids.

I was ordered to spend $700,000 on my department or risk losing
funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; my budget was already substantial. I ended up buying new computers for the computer learning center, half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America ...

I have had to intervene several times for young and substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students, here in the country less than 3 months, who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them names and throwing things, that the teachers were in tears.

Free medical, free education, free food, free day care etc., etc, etc. Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements?

To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs.

Higher insurance, medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.

Boy, this says it all and more. I remember (way back when) we lived in Altadena and our kids were part of the new bussing program. Because the elementary school they were bussed to also had a high percentage of low income kids (I guess it was a title 1 school) they got breakfast for 10c and yes, like you are saying, it was a complete breakfast even though hot dogs were on the menu. I objected to the dime only as we could afford to pay more, but the administrators explained that was the price, cut and dry. I griped about the hot dogs as well, but was told, it is a way to get kids to eat breakfast. I can assure you, our kids rarely ate breakfast at school.

Who wrote this? What kind of journalism is this? This teacher doesn't even have a name. The name of the Southern California school is also omitted. It sounds just like the other emails the illegal immigration board recycles over and over with exaggerated and made up facts

Anyway this belongs in the illegal immigration forum.
Don't know where it belongs or if it is acturate or not but I do know the title 1 schools do get free breakfast and lunches. And I do know my response is 100% correct. Again, the rest I don't know..

Well its no wonder when they're more than half of the school and the entire world around them caters to them in Spanish. Where's the incentive to learn English?

Of course it depends on your school district (which is the same as your county), but Florida schools have had free breakfast for years. This is for all elementary, middle, and high schools regardless of percentage of disadvantaged students. All students are allowed to get food, too. The food is nowhere near as elaborate as what the above poster mentioned, however. You can choose between a baggie of fruit, a prepackaged bowl of cereal, or some sort of breakfast sandwich (picture an Egg McMuffin or something, but of far cheaper quality), as well as a milk carton or juice bag.

This is likely a hoax chain letter:
Cheap Tomatoes - snopes.com

Snopes status on it so far, though, is officially "undertermined."

I will say this, however: this past week, my old high school was rated as one of the ten worst performing high schools in Orange County. When I went there in the 1970's, it was probably about 70% white and most students expected to move on to college. I felt like I got a pretty decent education there.

The demographics of that school and the area in general, though, changed radically with a huge influx of illegals and now more than half of the students at my alma mater receive free breakfasts and a large chunk of them are in ESL programs. Crime in that town has skyrocketed thanks to increased gang activity.

That the junior high my brother went to in the same town wasn't on the ten worst middle schools is kinda puzzling to me because even in the early 70's it was evident that campus was headed downward due, again, to a growing hispanic gang presence.

I can also attest to the financial problems hospitals are having with illegals. My mom was a nurse at a well known OC hospital.

Whether the story is legit, I guess we won't know. Most of us are realizing much of what we read via the net is exaggerated, taken out of context or plain out lies, but much of what was in the letter is true, as for Snopes has been on the block lately for not always giving accutate information. I think many of us had figured that one out as well. Like most things, the website is slanted, but that is another story.

Huh.

factcheck.org has found no bias with Snopes.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/04/snopescom/

Anyway, I'm curious about this substantial problem with inaccurate information. I'm absolutely certain that, given the size of the website, snopes.com contains inaccuracies. Virtually any sizeable website does, inevitably. But it's so chronic that it's a problem with snopes.com? Really?

Surely, the Annenberg Foundation (which operates factcheck.org) isn't part of some conspiracy covering up for snopes.com, are they?

Like I said, I'm curious about the snopes.com 'slant'.
