I live in Santa Monica, and before that, West LA. I've recently been looking at places all over Orange County and never realized until now how amazing and beautiful it is out there, mainly Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. I've also heard that it's a really safe place as well.

Is Orange County better than LA County? It sure seems like it.

Please define "better."

So you want to somehow compare a county of three million people with a county of ten million people.

You realize how vague this question is right?

Are you comparing Garden Grove to Holmby Hills? Orange to Pacoima? etc.

Overall I would say LA has better scenery considering its 4x larger and includes Catalina & San Clemente Islands.

The most dangerous areas in LA are worse than the most dangerous areas in OC. The safest areas are the same.

There are just as many pretentious pains in the ass in South OC as there are on the west side so I would say the people in both can be just as obnoxious.

I'll clarify a bit.

It looked to me like Orange County's beach cities (Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, etc) are better than LA's beach cities (Santa Monica, Venice, etc)?

Give me LA County over Orange every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

LA beach cities are big and dense. OC beach cities are very laid back and not dense at all. Two different lifestyles, some like one others like the other. Can't really generalize.

I think the actual beaches are nicer in OC. Less people, less crowded, cleaner, etc. As for the actual communities they're not that similar. Venice is super dense compared to Laguna. It's also way cheaper.

For me personally, Belmont Shore would be my first pick based on the ameneties nearby, budget, and proximity to my family's jobs.

This topic has been rehashed a million times. LA is a big city with tons of ethnic restaurants etc. In my opinion, OC is mostly a 'burb of LA and thus the two cannot really be compared. OC is part of the metro LA area, not the reverse, although OC has created a parallel identity for itself. Personally, I love OC, but recognize that for big venues and night life, LA is it. I find OC to be much more livable, cleaner, and with better amenities. That said, I love LA too, it's just that I would not want to live there unless it were in a few exclusive areas.

Hermosa and Redondo Beach are pretty damn nice if you want to include those.
