While a good start, I recommend far more studying; far beyond AA in the medical field.

You may want to research dental hygienist jobs some more before you devote time and money in that field. I just went to my dentist for a cleaning. My dental hygienist works at 2 offices, but the other office is closing. She's going to have a hard time finding work, she said. Several DH friends have been looking for work for years without getting hardly any response.

What's wrong? Is the field too saturated with DH? Yes, not just that, she said, but a lot of dentists are doing their own cleaning. Well, I know 2 dentists who do that.

No use spending all that time and money and not have a job in the field

I agree with the above post, and I just want to emphasize the importance of exploring the demand in your area specifically. Don't be afraid to relocate for work, if this is really something you want to do.

And don't ask the schools about jobs. They may not be honest. Law schools were telling their students and potential students about the many jobs available, but after graduating with huge debt, many weren't able to find a work.

I guess I would call up dental offices and see if they have any positions open and if not, find out when they last hired a DH.

Besides all the advice everyone gave you, my advice would also be to look into the schools and what CA requires you to be licensed with. I live in OR and work for a dental company. We have many DA schools but very few are CODA certified (a school doesn't have to be to get a great education) and very few offer EFDA (which we require).

If you're looking for a more "stable" job in CA, I'd suggest looking into corporate dentistry and see how those jobs compare to private practices (as a DA or DH).
