There are some nice hotels off 405 and Jamboree. Are you guys looking for apartment condo townhouse or SFR. Buying or renting? Do you need to live in Irvine? Or can you have a small commute?
Are you coming here in vacation or to scope things out?

we booked hotel.

we are coming to scope things out would be renting, preferably townhouse. Irvine seems too pricey...
right now husband doesn't have a commute and i love it!! son has cerebral palsy (uses walker) and no commute means hubby very helpful in morning. he's 14 and getting bigger.

last winter in NJ put me over the edge and now i'm reminded again why life would be easier, maybe? better with no cold weather.

adults with spastic muscles say they do better in warm weather...

What's your rental budget for a townhouse? Lake Forest is close to Irvine and rents there are also more reasonable.

My hunch is that you will have to consider an apartment or small condo.

Check Zillow, but your townhouse budget seems to be too low for this general area. Zillow only lists one small unit for that price range in Lake Forest:
Lake Forest, CA Real Estate & Homes For Sale - 313 Homes - Zillow

There is also one small townhouse unit for $2000 or less in Aliso Viejo:
Rental Listings - 5 Rentals - Zillow

AV is very small (7.47 sq mi), but this is an older area about as far away as possible from the center of the city. Still, it's right near major stores (Costco, Kohls, Wal Mart, etc.) and a shopping plaza, that are all located in nearby Laguna Niguel.

Yes, I'm from Manhattan, and one reason I decided to live in Aliso, was because while it is definitely suburban, it's also densely populated, and so a bit unlike more traditional burbs.

Stay as close to your office as possible... Commutes can be a bear, especially in South County.
there are times when the 15 mile commute Home from Irvine to Huntington Beach takes an hour (commute to Irvine takes about 20 minutes)

Irvine is very spread out and their are many adjacent cities that may be a bit more cost effective.
