Hi there,
I noticed a while back that if you look east from the 5 freeway near Sand Canyon and Jeffery, the hill above Irvine has a big cut in the hills. Does anyone know what is going on there? It looks pretty high up to be a housing development, plus I think this started over a year ago at least.

Thanks!

Uh, hate to break the news, but that is the county mega-landfill (aka the dump). During most days, there is a convoy of garbage hauling trucks headed there from all over OC. They usually take Sand Canyon to Portola Pkwy, and there is an entrance road to head up to the dump near there. Google Maps will give you an aerial view, and it is not a pretty sight.

I wonder if all the people that are buying those expensive new homes in the Portola Springs and Orchard Hills area of Irvine are aware of the giant landfill just up the hill from them. On warm summer mornings when there is not much wind, sometimes you can get a strong whiff of the landfill smell. It can almost bring tears to the eyes.

If it is a residential development, more than likely it is the Portola Springs housing development master planned by the Irvine Company.

Portola Springs

Nope! It's the second biggest landfill in OC! Mmmmmmm the fresh smell of garbage!

In all seriousness, that's one of the things that is helping the county get back on its feet after the 90's bankruptcy.

Oh thanks guys, I was wondering what the heck? I noticed it all carved up, then nothing going on as far as construction. Ug... that's sad, I wish there was a way at least they could have put it a little further back or something. That group of nice hills look like it's been horribly wounded!

Default Hmmm...

Been noticing more activity up on that hill lately. I starting to think it's going to be a "Mount Rushmore" of sorts of famous California governors.

Seriously, I'm going to call the chamber of commerce or someone. It just looks wrong!

The smell is pretty bad. People don't do their research when they buy. This is probably the reason you see high turn over rates in the Portola Springs and Sand canyon area.

I've forgotten all about the county's bankruptcy until I read a recent article in the LA Times about LA county dumping trash in Orange County--Brea, Irvine and San Juan Cap., if I remember.

I think the trash deal ends in 2010? but trash importation will stop in 2016? The cities or county trash board needs to decide on whether to extend the agreement. I think Irvine gets 2 million bucks for having the landfills.

Wow, all is not perfect in Irvine...

Those hills worth a fortune. They are just flattening out a little to build more homes. And since its in a hill, they will call the community with something with "Hills" at the end of it and tack on 50k+ per home. And we are all know who wouldn't want to live in a hill so it will be sold out in weeks.

All I know for sure is the 405 will be the next 91.
