Is it legal to shoot a coyote? Is coyote hunting a thing? Seems like if you folks had an open season on them, you could maybe control them some.

That said, the problem likely isn't coyote's in rural areas, but in urban areas. Not going to be much hunting or shooting going on in a downtown or suburb area...

Mammal Hunting Regulations - California Fish and Game Commission

§472. General Provisions.

Except as otherwise provided in Sections 478 and 485 and subsections (a) through (d) below, nongame birds and mammals may not be taken.
  • (a) The following nongame birds and mammals may be taken at any time of the year and in any number except as prohibited in Chapter 6: English sparrow, starling, coyote, weasels, skunks, opossum, moles and rodents (excluding tree and flying squirrels, and those listed as furbearers, endangered or threatened species).
========================

YMMV due to local jurisdictions' regs regarding firearm discharge. Of course there are now air powered arms that can do some nice work.

Coyotes are considered vermin. you can kill them year round. Little hard in the city though.

came across this today...Coyote enters Laguna Beach home and snatches pet Chihuahua, owners say - LA Times
Quite frightening, could have just as easily been that infant. Hope those folks step up their precautions.

I read the article and it said the little girl received "superficial" wounds... while I think its awful she was attacked I'd hardly characterize that as a "mauling".

I put them on the level of dogs in terms of have dangerous they are. And actually, dogs can probably do more damage.

I’m not a big person, but I jog by coyotes on my running trail. I don’t have a single doubt I could do more damage to the coyote than it can to me, if it ever came down to an attack.

Coyotes a simply a nuisance, but not more than that.

Yep, and most of them are second and third gen pups who were born as Urban coyotes. I wonder if that coyote had pups in the park nearby. I don't think they usually have babies this time of year but I do know if you get close to a den they get more aggressive. They are starting to have them under bushes in parks now.

Jogging past them may not be such a good idea, remember the Canadian singer that got killed by a pack of coyotes when she was jogging.
