I will be moving from Garden Grove to Irvine and will be doing all the heavy lifting by myself.
Is renting a small U-haul truck the best option? Anyone know a good mover service that is affordable?

Get this and you almost don't need any friends to help. About $45.

I've always rented a moving truck (Ryder in my case, since I get a family discount) and had family help. I've been told that the Vietnamese moving companies are really cheap. I saw one on the road yesterday, but don't remember the name or phone number

If you do rent a truck and do the moving alone, those flat wooden rolling dollies (pic above) are great, but I got mine for about $7 at Harbor Freight, not $45. Shoulder straps are awesome for moving the fridge, but you need another person on the other end of the straps.

I think any moving company will charge you a couple hundred dollars, though. How about hiring a day laborer outside Home Depot to help? If everything is boxed up and ready to go, then it won't take much time. My mother-in-law did that one year and the guys were great.

I so hate moving. Good luck to you.

Yeah there were several day laborers offering moving help in front of u haul in Tustin so I am sure you can find one too. When my wife and I moved back to CA last year we didn't want to risk day laborer and we had some valuable things so we found good groupon coupons and hired 2 guys local, don't know who we used. We lifted the easy stuff and made them responsible for the heavy, breakable, damage your wall items.

If you don't have a lot of stuff, a U-Haul trailer will work also and is cheaper as you don't have to pay milage.
