NYC and OC are truly polar opposites. A word to the wise, remember to maintain at least an online subscription to the NY Times.*

*This is just assuming you don't prefer the NY Daily News or the NY Post.

The culture shock from NYC to OC will be considerable (in ways good and bad). OC is like the opposite of NYC, in every way.
Orange County is Long Island with Palm Trees and Nicer Weather. Trust me, I've lived in both places.

They're basically polar opposites. Not really seeing any Long Island feel in Orange County. I have also lived in both places.

Long Island is as New Yorky as it gets. In many ways it's more New York than NYC, since it's more local and isn't as inundated with people from around the country and world. Orange County is just completely different.

I've yet to hear anyone say, "We prefer to be able to drive to the beach."

OP: One thing to keep in mind as you plan. Your test drive was during good weather. Laguna has road closures and slow-going during the rainy season. (Oh, please..please...please let there be a rainy season.)

No not really... Put the loud people, accents and guidos aside, replace good bagels and good italian food with good Mexican food and you pretty much have two similar places.

I've been using this analogy when explaining Orange County whenever I'm back home in NYC.

But you can't put those things aside...and that's a big problem with NYC

I would prefer to live in a seven bedroom 12,000sq ft home on top of a hill with a helo pad, and fulltime servants. G-d answers all prayers, sometimes the answer is "no".
