Yes NYC covers a wide area but it also has the transportation infrastructure which SoCal and especially OC does not. There is some sprawl in NYC, but SoCal is essentially all sprawl, except for downtown LA and a few similar city centers.

I was in NYC two years ago as a speaker at a symposium and getting around was simple and I was staying in NJ just across of Manhatten (Great views from my hotel window of the skyline) and there is nowhere in SoCal that is as easy to get around, as it is there.

Using Manhattan as a example of concentrated well overcrowded area. That's all. It may not happen everywhere here, but downtown LA sure is starting to get the feel of a mini Manhattan. Look up Century City. Lots of high rises going up there too.

NYC's infrastructure problems are citywide, and not confined to Manhattan:

Report: NYC Infrastructure Is Crumbling: Gothamist
Some of the oldest infrastructure includes the city's main sewer lines, which are over 80 years old, and a 90-year-old subway system, which actually seems to be managing pretty well, all things considered. Homeless shelters are on average 70 years old, and water mains clock in at an average of 69 years old, which is noteworthy considering the city experienced 403 water main breaks last year. "We’re probably going to see more water mains that burst because of fatigue cracks,” Sam Schwartz, a transportation engineer and former New York City traffic commissioner, said.

The Irvine co is building 1,200 homes in Orange on Chapman and Jamboree. They are grading now.. I have no idea what it will do to my condo value (I live on Chapman a few miles away). I do know that Chapman is already packed with cars it's a main artery to Santiago cyn and toll roads etc etc. Any thoughts and opinions?
Ps the rangers at Peters cyn are not happy

If they build it, they will come, and ... traffic will get far worse. Why make OC like Manhattan or any big city, when it cannot have the transportation infrastructure that needs to go with such building?

Oh, sorry, so the Irvine Company can keep on making money.

I agree expatca they are building like crazy on El Toro at the park and Foothill Ranch and the old base by the District and now huge development at the closed amphitheater. I check out the model homes and the lots are tiny no backyards they call them outdoor retreats. There all over 700,000 and they all sell out with cash buyers it's insane. There is not enough infrastructure either they need schools, supermarkets, bigger parking lots. I'm planning on moving out of state soon going to check out Arizona next month. I just can't take this insanity anymore and I'm a Ca native .. Pretty sad

You do know that the Irvine Co. Is building multi level apartments in San Fran right? They are building high rise apartments there because they can't build houses fast enough. I mean I'm talking accelerated 120 day schedules being shrunk to 90 days. You think there is some corner cutting there?

I think "some" may be too optimistic.

That's putting it mildly. Very mildly.
