I've recently been offered a great position out in Orange County. I've lived in Wash DC, Chicago, NYC, and now Atlanta. All of those above have been pretty gay friendly or at least have a "gay ghetto". From what I'm hearing Orange County is the conservative armpit of coastal California.

The job is located in Santa Ana and I've been looking at Costa Mesa as an area to live in. I searched on google and found that Costa Mesa has about 4 gay bars.

I would appreciate some input, I would love to take this career advancement but I also don't want to live in an area I have to be uncomfortable being who I am. Also I have a boyfriend and I do enjoy holding his hand every now and then.

Long Beach and Laguna Beach have areas that are "gay friendly".

I had a friend who lived in Seal Beach for quite a few years and he and his partner never reported any problems. I think gays seem to get some kind of weird kick out of exaggerating how horrible it it oustide of the gay meccas.

its not about getting a kick out of exaggerating how horrible it is outside of the gay meccas, its about being able walk down the street without people whispering or staring at you (or even worse) for holding your boyfriends hand. Straight people don't understand that to be able to be affectionate with your loved one in public (a simple smooch or holding hands - nothing vulgar) is a luxury for gay people/couples.

Well, they think Ronny Regan is a saint there(literally) so extrapolate from that.

I was an OC resident from 1960 to 2004. There are gay-friendly areas (Laguna Beach, Irvine, Seal Beach, Costa Mesa, Capistrano Beach, the canyons), gay-ambivalent areas (San Clemente, Yorba Linda, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Dana Point), and gay-unfriendly areas (Santa Ana, El Toro, parts of Huntington Beach... basically any area with a majority of traditional religious South-o-the-border types or skinhead white trash types).

Here's a map that illustrates how OC voted on Prop 8. http://projects.latimes.com/election...sults-by-city/

I wouldn't hold your boyfriend's hand in Santa Ana if I were you.

And it isn't because of white people for once.

If you want to express affection for your boyfriend in public, OC ain't for you, for the most part. Folks in OC are generally pretty tolerant and most don't care if you are gay or not, but it is more conservative and they would just rather not see two guys smooching (for my part, I don't care because two guys kissing in public ain't the end of the world). Think West Hollywood, Laguna Beach or Palm Springs for more tolerant environments in that regard.

IMO, there's no city that's gay-friendly, even San Francisco.

But any number of Gay tolerant cities and communities.

The average person will stare or at the least do a double take if two men hold hands. This is in no way means they are anti-gay. It has to do with it being natural for someone to watch or look at a situation that is not an everyday occurrence.
