The apartment is for a 60+ yo person that has knee problems (can't walk uphill or go upstairs) and doesn't drive.

#1 priority: An area as flat as possible so she can walk around the community or nearby parks.

Plus 1: Ideally, walking distance to at least a grocery store and a pharmacy, that way she can be more independent.

Plus 2: Not necessary but it will be good if close to a catholic church or the basilica.

Are there any suggestions?

Although she is 60+, there will be a younger person living with her so I dont know if communities for seniors will allow someone who is not a senior to also live in the property.

We've seen several options but its hard to tell how hilly the areas are just by looking at google maps, specific examples below but no idea about the terrain: Villas at monarch beach, Monarch coast apartments, Pacific pointe, Harbor pointe, Rancho del mar...

Villas a monarch beach.

Mostly level ground. She will need a downstairs apartment. All apts. are one level. No town house upstairs bedrooms from the rest of the apt.

Easy walk to the buss stop on PCH going north toward laguna beach

Have to cross PCH, at the signal light ...to travel south to Dana Point Town.

Library, same cul de sac as Villas entry and leasing office. flat ground, maybe a 2 minute walk.

Bakery, and sandwich shops across PCH, easy flat walk.

Grocery shopping. She will need transportation .

Closest to the Villas:

MONARCH BAY SHOPPING VILLAGE ( guess is about 1/2 mile or so from the Villas. Hill down, and Hill up on return.

* Gelsons super market * CVS Pharmacy * Starbucks coffee * Chase Bank * Pet store * Beauty shop * Donut shop
* Stella's very nice and quality Italian plus restaurant and lounge. Dry Cleaners, Gas station * botiques.

MONARCH BEACH VILLAS: On property....pretty flat walkways, with maybe a couple of spaced out steps, or no steps. Varies with the units. * Flat walkways * landscaped : lots of green grass : plants * trees * swimming pool and jacuzzi
* separate smaller jacuzzi away from main pool * fitness center at pool * gated community, but open walk ways without going thru vehicle gate.

Please be advised, that much of south county is hilly, so a visit to do your own visual inspection of the propertied and area would be a good plan.

Churches : San Juan Capistrano, there is the old and lovely MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, and I believe some over
55 plus senior apartments. But, my knowledge is very limited as to how close the mission is to the senior apartments.

Monarch Coast : They are three or four stories, and lots of up and downs. We pass them while hiking up the Salt Creek Trail . Multi story, down stairs units look very, very dark. Hmmmm, cave dwelling. It might be difficult for her knees id
she were to move there.

Just my own observations .

Just be advised, that most of south county can be hilly, San Juan Capistrano might be some of the flatest and more level
terrain .

Our roads thru the county are not at 90 degree angles. I think that might be due to the builders of those roads having to weave thru canyons and around steep areas.

As to checking out YELP.....always a good plan. But , we have just signed our 5th year lease here at the VILLAS.

Another positive : The office management at the Villas has totally changed, and improved by light years, and light years. All of us residents are very excited about the new manager /s . Fabulous people with quality human values, and are most helpful, professional and friendly, Shannon and Aiicia.
