Why? What's going on? This is how Russians react to economic crises or even rumors of an economic crisis; they hoard bread, first, then TP.

"Experts in consumer behavior say a surge in panic buying comes as no surprise amid a looming global pandemic.

“Our choices are influenced by what we think and feel at the moment,” said Ravi Dhar, a marketing professor at Yale University and director of the Center for Customer Insights.

With coronavirus stories dominating the media, he told me, “people are responding in ways they respond to other uncertainties. Like in an impending hurricane, they are stocking up on canned goods, toilet paper, etc.”

Stockpiling sanitizer, toilet paper is understandable. But is it rational?

"Commoners" and ""plebs" are merely stocking up on TP, water, and hand sanitizer. This is what some of the rich are doing :

The Rich Are Preparing for Coronavirus Differently

Concierge doctors, yachts, chartered planes and germ-free hideaways.

Quote:
Some wealthy people have told Bloomberg News that they have been staying in their Hamptons homes and are prepared to jet off to cabins in Idaho if things get worse. And The Guardian reported that executives have chartered jets for “evacuation flights” out of China and other affected areas.
Quote:
A luxe bunker, it seems, can take many forms.

Dr. Stein said that another Sollis member, an heiress in Southampton, N.Y., built a medical isolation room complete with a ventilation system.

The word “room,” however, hardly captures it. Dr. Stein said it is equipped with a negative pressure system to restrict the circulation of pathogens, and is basically an isolated guest wing consisting of a bedroom and kitchen stocked with IV hydration, medicines, lab supplies, gloves, gowns, masks, oxygen and food, as well as a set of dishes and linens.

In certain pockets of Silicon Valley, where tech-elite survivalists drool over abandoned missile silos that were converted into luxury bunkers, coronavirus is precisely the doomsday scenario they’ve been preparing for.

No, people aren't going to want to go to places where other sick people are coughing, sneezing, and farting on each other (Costco).

We just returned from a two week, fabulous eco adventure in the jungles of costa rica Erica will be going to Costco this Sunday, to replenish our normal purchases, and not going monkey arsed ape and wipe out the stocks of T.P. That is our Dana Point Costco . This will be our first Costco trip since returning. Ralphs and Trader Joes are just normal , as usual operations.

However, when we lived on Kauai Island, and a hurricane was heading our way, and there were Hurricane warinings, we all too that very seriously, and would stock up on emergency supplies.

It was interesting to see, shoppers at the LIHUE COSTCO, with baskets filled with T.P, and cartons of bottled water and then baskets rolling along with food items. No problems, and Lihue, COSTCO did not run out of those products, that we were aware of.

The island learned after INIKI made a direct hit and demolished the island, buildings, shops, hotels. trees, electrical and telephone poles, and to this day, some areas have not been rebuilt. we took all warnings seriously and prepared with more than just shopping for T.P Brought in patio furniture, tape windows, etc.

In the 10 years that we lived here, at Banyan Harbor, just across from Kalapaki Beach and the Lihue Marriot and Nawilwili harbor, many Hurricanes were down graded, or went north or south of us. Wind and rain, and some flooding, but nothing like INIKI.......she was was supposed to stay south, and as she was about to pass Kauai, INIKI did a sharp 90 degree right hand turn, and Force Five winds and accompanying seas make a direct hit on the island. It was horrific.

As to the coronavirus, we are not stocking up, as incidents here in Orange County are very, very, very few. But, if there is an actual outbreak and we need to protect ourselves, we will do what is necessary. Right now, we are going to follow the published procedures, and be alert, use situational awareness, wash our hands, stand clear of people coughing into their elbows especially when out and about, which is frequent.

And as per normal procedure, if we get sick from anything, which is very infrequent, we stay home , and take care of ourselves and do not go out and infect others with colds, flu, Virus' etc.

Otherise, we will continue to live our happy and active lives here in south county....

Yeserday, we worked out, and then when hiking Crystal Cove, the No Dogs Rail, down the Poles Trial, and then the
Canyon Trail back to the ranger station, and then our rewards. Drove up to Corona Del Mar to Tommy Bahama's for Erica to use her 25% discount card in ladies wear, and I snugged into the bar, then we both had lunch.

Today , thrs, we are off to hike a short Nature Trail at Caspers Wildlife Park and then BBQ some steaks, and enjoy the peacfulness of no one else being around.

See why we love Orange County.

Denny and Erica
