Hello! I am planning on making a move from Wisconsin to the OC within a year with the right job opportunity. I am hoping to make somewhere between 70-80k. I am an early-30s woman, and will be moving with my boyfriend and my dog. I would love to live somewhere with fun restaurants/bars in walking distance, short ride to the beach, and other outdoors activities close by. Would love any insight on what cities I should consider living in on this salary, and other things mentioned? I am planning on spending about $1700-2000 on rent. Thanks so much!

Default Well it would help to know what city you work in?

I will throw you bone for heck of it. You can live (rent) anywhere on that money.
I would look at San Clemente or Newport. Traffic is going to be a concern if you have a 9 to 5 gig. If you are like a nuero surgeon and can work odd hours at night then traffic won't be that much of and Issue. FYI no locals call it the OC.

The job would be in Anaheim. And it would be 9-5.

70k, close to the beach, probably not going to be very affordable. Sorry.

Just out of curiosity (and off topic), how do people who work 9-5 take a lunch break and still do an eight hour day?

You can get a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment in Newport Beach for just under $2000/month. Go to apartments.com and plug-in your numbers. Ideally, it should take you about thirty minutes to travel from Newport Beach to Anaheim by taking the 55N and then the 5 N.

It’s doable.

$2000 on a month on a 70k salary isn't affordable at all unless you eat ramen noodles everyday, and don't go out, ever.

Los Alamitos is one of the most walkable non-beach cities in OC and has bars and restaurants within walking distance of the apartment area. Safe city, very close to El Dorado Regional Park/Nature Park, and very close to Coyote Creek(which has a bike trail that heads to the beach). To most of Anaheim, I'd say about a 30minute commute down Ball Rd or Katella(it's a 10-20 minute drive to Disneyland on the weekends), not sure what the 22 freeway looks like in the morning, but probably take just as long if not longer. 1700-2000 will put you in condo rentals, 1300-1500 in a decent 2bd apt.
