Its not too bad your probably looking at a 1 and a half hour drive. Most people are usually going the other way being that they are heading from S.D. to O.C./L.A. You will probably hit traffic in North County S.D. to La Jolla and on your way home the 805/5 merger is always a pain. I would say on a bad day you might see a 2 and and half almost 3 hour drive.

I drive Irvine to Miramar (In land from La Jolla) at least once a week. In light to medium traffic I can get to Miramar in 1.25 hours. From San Clemente, SJC or Dana Point, you can shave 20-25 minutes off that. (Caveat - All this driving has given me a leadfoot and I drive 75-80mph depending on traffic)

The key is beating the traffic in North SD county. I try to avoid the I-5 from 7 to 9am southbound and after 4:30pm northbound. If you can do the same it will make a big difference. Slogging your way up & down the 5 in rush hour traffic everyday would really suck, and as mentioned earlier lead to a 1.5+ hour commute each way.

One other thing, I have seen some heavy back ups exiting the 5 into the La Jolla area in the morning. Never dealt with it directly as I was driving by heading all the way to downtown San Diego, but on multiple occasions passing through La Jolla the 2 or 3 exits after the 5/805 split back up really bad onto the freeway. You may need to allow extra time to get off and deal w/ surface streets if this is common.

What city in the OC will your wife be working. I second the idea of North San Diego County for your sake, but if she works in Fullerton for example, the commute would be the same if you lived in San Clemente (given you listen to OCinvestors bit about leaving early from both the OC and La Jolla. If you don't leave La Jolla before 3:30pm, you will already hit traffic from the 56/ Carmel Valley area all the way to Palomar Airport in Carlsbad).

that will never work. Drive 50 miles MAXIMUM. Either find a closer work location or move closer. That is what it comes down to.

Did the drive yesterday. I passed the SONGS at 9:54am and was at the Miramar exit to the 805 at 10:37am

Traffic is not all htat bad going in that direction. I used to drive from inland OC - Orange - to MiraMar a few time a week. i would leave at 7 and be there about 9-9:30, but from South OC it would shave a good 45 minutes to an hour off that.

But i do think it is a long commute considering gas prices, and coming hoome will suck unless you leave work at 3pm. otherwise it could easily take 3 hours if you leave at 5pm
