Hello everyone, me and my family are moving to orange county specifically Irvine, soon. I am quite scared to be frank since after research, it seems OC is leading in hate crimes, especially towards muslims (even more than TX!)

so, my question for the people there is, do you see Muslims often, Indians, Pakistanis,??? will I stand out, or will a hijab stand out??? would someone be racist to them?

thank you

There are a lot of muslims in OC, especially in Irvine and north county. A lot of Persians are down there as well (though most are Jewish Persians).

Indians have a hub in Artesia in the downtown area. It is a really cute strip of restaurants and stores. They have some amazing food there. The most diverse area would be the triangle from Irvine up to Fullerton then west to LA County and then down the 405. Huntington Beach makes big headlines for hate groups, but day to day life there isn't really an issue.

I don't think your family will have an issue.

I've never heard of a hate crime in OC against a Muslim. I am sure there have been a couple, but I've just never heard of one.

There are several large areas with lots of Middle Easterners, but to be honest, I have no idea if they are Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Baha'i, Zoroaster or whatever. The number of Middle Eastern grocery stores we have should tell you something.

I see women in hijabs and chadors at the Spectrum in Irvine all the time.

As to Indians, half the doctors in Orange County are Indian, again, I doubt anyone knows or cares about what religion they are.

You'll be safer here than most places in the U.S. Don't sweat it. Orange county has its share of jackholes and whitetrash, but mostly fairly open minded professionals and decently educated folks.

Unfortunately racism is not localized but fluid. With that said, Irvine is safe and it's marketed towards families and young working class adults.

Irvine is transient in a sense that there are a lot of rental communities. This along with jobs brings in people from all walks of life.

I lived in a rental by the Spectrum Center for 2 years. Within those two year many people came and went but never had I seen any issues with racism. However, stereotypes are highlighted. For example, when I was in my rental, many local chatter consists of not wanting to live around young Muslims. This is not due to race but the main complaint is noise throughout the day and night (loud talking, revving cars, parties, smoking, heavy scented oils, etc). Many here may not being this up but transparency is key.

Franky, there is nothing to be afraid of. Irvine is safe (one of the safest) and people have a tendency to keep to themselves. Being from NYC, I find it strange that neighbors don't interact much.

Just my two cents.

You would be safe in pretty much all of california. Also not true about Huntington Beach my friends are a mix of political beliefs but nothing to the extremes like in other states. Welcome to California my fellow human

They're Persian Jews, not "Jewish Persians". Because they're Jews from Iran, not Persians that happen to be Jewish. That was plain insulting.

There is a difference between Persian Jews and Jewish Persians? Is there also a difference between American Christians and Christian Americans?
