The C-D side of things, yes. The C-D forums? Oy, not so much. There's little hard fact to be found in the forums.

I’ve noticed in general that many posters are treating the forum like facebook. Not much thought going into their remarks. Just a gut reaction that takes up a single line of new type. And that’s after auto-quoting the entire post above theirs. Just lazy and wanting to throw out a clever little quip. That certainly won’t promote discussion and sometimes kills it.

It's too political half the time. It made many people disgusted how charged it is. It's so sad.

I've noticed the same. I took about a 5 year break, but recently returned. I've spent a lot of time in various parts of the country and I find it enjoyable to help others.

This is a big part of it, I agree. Same issues have happened in automotive forums, even the strongest out there. Everything has moved to Facebook.

City-Data used to feel more like a "wide collection of folks". Many of the people who remain are the chest-thumpers for their city, and motivated enough to keep logging in. There is more of a "know it all" vibe from posters than a dialogue nowadays.

But I agree that competition from Reddit, YouTube, FB, NextDoor etc have cut down on the number of people who simply wander in to ask for advice. And I don't think it helps that the forum looks like something straight out of 2005. I think this is even the default "skin" for vBulletin.

Many of them escaped from behind enemy lines and now frequent discussions in other cities.

OC forum is deader than you would expect especially compared to others.

This is probably a large part of it. People who own houses here aren't selling and moving, and people who might like to move in either can't afford a house/rental or can't find one at all.

These days I hear of younger acquaintances (non-homeowners) moving to other states, but I can't remember the last time a homeowner I know sold their OC house and moved to another, or moved away.

I was surprised how many available houses we looked at in 6 mos. before buying a new construction, even tho we were super picky because we were only looking at homes or lots on the beach or water in specific neighborhoods. They are out there, if you can afford them ofc. I didn’t know you were in OC saibot.
