just google catalina cruises or something to that effect. You can also leave out of Long Beach as well.

Catalina is incredible. It's like being in another world. Just 26 miles across the sea, just as the songs goes. I went there last summer. Loved it. I also used to go there every summer as a kid. The YMCA has a camp there.

If you go now, it looks like you'll run across gang members, according to the L.A. Times.

Gang members? On the island? On the boat? Where?

Both times I went to Catalina, I went on the boat out of Long Beach near the Queen Mary. The view approaching the island is so gorgeous -- reminds me of the Mediterranean. The town itself is cute but not terribly upscale. We took a tour of the island that offered fabulous views and was definitely worth it. Wish I had done some other tours while I was there, maybe to the other side of the island. Anyway, it's a gorgeous island and I always recommend it to any of my friends going to the LA area. I was very sorry to hear of the fires there last year.

I took the Catalina Express boat back in 2007, which takes about 45 minutes to get there. I only planned to spend the day there w/ my bf. I went as a child & my bf had never been.

Returning all those yrs later, it was nothing like I remembered. If you like that sleepy town atmosphere where you can just sit & read book for hrs, that's the place for you. They do have snorkeling & horseback riding, but I'm not the type to do those things. My bf & I were bored after 2-3 hrs & went back earlier than expected.

I was at BSA Camp Emerald Bay there for a week in 1973 (maybe 1974). Still have my Camp Emerald Bay coffee mug.

I was just there on Saturday. Met up with some friends for a birthday. It's a beautiful island with georgeous water. But... it doesn't look much better than Laguna Beach. It's only a great place to visit if you don't live close to a beach. If you do, then it's not that big of a deal.

I think I am done with vacationing at the beach. Next time, I want to go more inland.
