Hi Guys,

Do you guys know of any nice areas around Hunington beach my sister will be moving there soon and she is looking to rent a home or townhome in a nice upscale metropolitan area with shops and strip malls and shopping. Also what are the colleges that are located in that area she is looking to go back to get her PHD. Thanks in advance guys.

What's her price range?
Any more specifics about the housing needs (number of BR? Roommates OK?)
Where exactly will she be commuting to? (The way I read the post is she wants to live in HB first and will find a university to earn a doctorate next; seems backwards.)

You're going about this the wrong way. She needs to find a university that has a doctorate in a program in which she is interested and qualified, apply and get accepted, then determine where to live.

Very few institutions offer doctorates, which really narrows where you can live during your studies. The ones that do, specialize in particular fields. Just because a particular university has a doctorate program doesn't mean they will have one in her field. Practically all programs require a master's degree in a specific field before they will let you enter a doctorate program in that field.

If she were to move to HB, the nearest universities that offer doctorates would be UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside. Irvine is closest, but they may not offer one in her field. UCLA and Riverside are very far. Plus, doctorate programs can be difficult to get into. She might not be admitted to her first choice.

Find a university, then worry about housing.

Actually it's not backwards she has her Masters and she has a very good job that will be in HB but she was hoping to find a college near by to maybe finish her PHD but her priority right now is her job secondary is a PHD because after all she can get that online. She is looking for maybe a 3B, Roomate NO!!! and commute time maybe 20-30 min is o.k. And the cost of the housing is open not too expensive but will pay for the comfort and the quality.

nearest "metropolitan" area(urban?) would be coastal/downtown long beach or belmont shore/naples.

other upscale areas with shops and such vary depending on what you want. if she wants an upscale mall, she should look by south coast plaza(costa mesa/irvine) or fashion island in newport. if she wants quaint shops in an upper middle class/upper class area she can look on balboa and lido islands, seal beach, sunset beach, surfside, or huntington harbor

Belmont Shore and Naples are very upscale. Even in this down market homes commonly sell above $3M in Naples and the median income is about $250k.
