Most people across the country would be in awe here. African Americans are often regarded highly in OC because they do not seem to follow any pattern of wealth....they are scattered everywhere. Newport Beach, Santa Ana, and Anaheim Hills all seem to have the same percentage of black people despite being radically different places.

But....like any locale, there has to be a group that gets picked on. We are no exception in OC. Thats where hispanics come in.

Another thing is that there really isn't that many black people in CA anyway, it's mostly just hispanics. I mean ya there is a lot, about 2,000,000+ but still it's not like the south states. And most of them are located in LA areas.

Perhaps you should consider being color-blind and quit being so race-obsessed.

OC folks only have a magnifying class..OC is by far one of the most race conscious places I have ever been in.
The white people here are scared to get tans I think, so they don't look mexican lol.

OC is just a strange place, it truly is an Orange Curtain in so many ways.

I don't think questioning racial population centers is race obsessed; in fact, it is an important sociological question. Besides, in this day and age, it is not about being color-blind..that is a silly and dated notion. It's about recognizing and embracing diversity. We can celebrate the cultures of others without pretending that we are all the same.

I agree with the reasoning above. There has never been many African-Americans in Orange County to begin with. For some reason early on, more settled in LA County (which I think at that time there were more jobs and opportunities for them in LA County than in OC). Also, in California, in general, there are more Latinos and also more Asian-Americans than African-Americans (you can even look at the US Census on California's population breakdown).

This is very true. Southern CA is segregated by socio-factors. That said, there are some assumptions at play here. The black people I know here are few, true, but they tend to have similar jobs as their neighbors, etc. but more importantly, they probably hold the same ideologies as well - conservatives, etc. It isn't because black people are usually poor, and so they can't afford it here, it's more likely because they don't have anything in common with the right-wing Christian white guy. This reveals that it is also likely political rather than just economical.

Yes, OC is more white than CA averages:

According to the 2006 ACS Estimates, California's population is:Demographics of California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Orange County Demographics:
RaceHispanic/Latino: 14.2%
White*: 58.2%
Black*: 2.1%
Native American*: 0%
Asian*: 20.6%
Hawaiian/Pacific Islander*: 0.3%
Other*: 0.4%
Multiracial*: 3.9%* Does not include individualsin this racial group
who identify as Hispanic/Latino.

Orange County QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

In LA, the percentage of blacks is 9.6% (higher than CA averages). But their averages are also higher for foreign born, hispanic, and Asian as well. It's more international than OC. Los Angeles County QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Orange County, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

By the way, many people who live here cannot afford to live here (myself included). It's not limited to minorities by any means! But they do what they can if they like the safety of the area for their kids, and if their work is here> otherwise there wouldn't be so many Latino families working like dogs, living in cramped quarters to take advantage of the schools, etc. Also, I find it quite offensive how people believe it's socially acceptable to discriminate against Hispanics. While illegal immigration is definitely a problem, many of them are not illegal. And many of them are not from Mexico. You do realize that there are more people in this world who speak Spanish than English (322 million vs. 302 million). List of languages by number of native speakers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And if you care to know, the original inhabitants of OC were the Acjachemen people! Then the Mexican agriculturalists moved in, and then the white guys!

There is Baldwin Hills in Los Angeles. It is a very notable affluent African-American communities. Hancock Park also has a sizable affluent African-American community. I don't think Southern California has any progressive communities like Oak Park, IL or Atlanta, GA.
