"That some people harbor these sentiments is not a surprise. Orange County's changing demographics have transformed our cities, and as a result we've seen many public debates on hot button issues ranging from illegal immigration to same sex marriage."

"One Register news story about a Santa Ana robbery didn't include the race, ethnicity or nationality of the suspect, yet some readers assumed the suspect was Mexican and posted derogatory comments about Latinos."

"The comments tie into the long history of acts of racism and expression in Orange County, "

I made the mistake of going over to their comments boards once. Felt like I needed to take a "Crying Game" shower afterwards.

Yes, OC Register is usually a haven for "cryers."

Why do I post this? -I felt like several people would benefit on this board due to the large amount of multi-cultural questions.

When we lived in the OC we stopped getting the OC Times and Register over the whole governor race (the first one).. not for nothing but the paper is to inform on subject and events, not spew personal opinions over and over again, by thier one sided writers..
We cancelled--and we explained why--and for years after we kept getting calls and even sudden free papers that we asked for them to come pick up....each time explaining we didnt want their form of journalism.

I got a better one for ya--

We subscribed to the Register (Sat/Sun only delivery) for a year and paid for it up front. We decided not to renew and tossed all the renewal notices in the garbage.

However, we continued to get the Register, even after the one year was up. Then they started sending us BILLS for papers we didn't want or pay for.

Oh, but it gets better. Seems the Register was INTENTIONALLY sending papers and billing in the hopes that people would just pay up. When I got my THIRD bill I called customer service (after trying for a week) and told them to stop delivering and that I would not pay the bill for the time period in question.

A few months pass, and as I'm chekcing my credit, what do I find? THE FRIGGIN OC REGISTER HAS TURNED ME INTO A COLLECTION AGENCY FOR NON-PAYMENT OF THE PAPERS I NEITHER ASKED FOR NOR WANTED!!!

Needless to say, the threat of legal action does wonders.

We didnt have it on our credit but they still call us... I feel for you... evidently NO does not mean NO.

The same thing happened to me but it was with the LA Times. I canceled and they kept sending me the paper. Then I got a bill for $1.00 with a letter saying to pay it or it will go to collections. Obviously I paid it but that paper was soooo hard to cancel.

That's why I don't subscribe to any of the major papers, except for the Sunday edition of the Long Beach Press-Telegram. If I want to read either the L.A. Times or O.C. Register, I just go to a vending machine a buy a copy for $1.00 or $1.25. Trying to cancel a newspaper subscription can be a nightmare indeed.

So true dennismpat,
With the LA Times I could not even talk to a live person about trying to cancel. I always would get the automated (press #1 for this and #2 for that). It might of changed since the mid 90's but boy it was a pain. They sure wanted you to keep getting that paper, that was very clear. LOL
