A buddy of mine once said to me back in the mid 1980s: "You'll see more blacks at a Kings (hockey) game than you will at an Angel game."

I really don't think so, I simply haven't heard the phrase or whatever you want to call it "black folks" for many years..Blacks, yes, Afician Americans, and similar, just not Black Folk. Why do you ask?

There are blacks in Orange County, just not that many. California as a whole has seen its black population decrease over the last decade or so. There is a fairly large (5000 members) African American church in Yorba Linda. However, I doubt all of those people live in that area. I am sure some commute from LA County and Riverside County since both are very close by.

It's more of a southern thing. I've heard 'black folk' quite a bit back in Texas, along with 'white folk'.

edit: nmnita, you're from Arkansas and you haven't heard that term for a while? I'm surprised.

With all the political correctness and constant word changing I was wondering if "black" had really fallen out of use among the PC crowd or if you were referring to the "folk(s)" part of it.

“Political Correctness is a flawed doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

well first of all I live in AR, but certainly am not from here, I was born and raised in Calif, lived in Texas for many years, Va and NM before moving here. We live in the NW section of Ar, no, not a person here has ever used the term, Black Folks, nor have I heard it used except by a few who happen to be a bit on the racist side. That is why I questioned the useage..In Texas we lived in mixed neighborhood and I worked for a major Hotel reservations center with a very large percentage of blacks, no one ever used the term..

Does that help explain why I would question someone using it?

I think some people just use the term 'folk' more often then others. I have friends who say they are going to their 'folks' for dinner, 'these folks came in to my work for...'. I dont think the question was in regards to 'black folk' as a negative, the way I took it was 'are there any folks who are black in OC'. I could be wrong, but it did not seem to be a negative to me.

i like the word black better. it just seems like you are trying not to offend people by saying african american. plus, there are arabs in africa so unless you call them africans, its not exactly politically correct either.
