My sister travels across the US a lot and is frequently outted as a Californian because she refers to freeways as "the". "Can you tell me how to get to THE 26?"

I think it's because freeways play such an elevated importance in California lifestyle. You don't just take 405, you take THE 405.

There are people here who spend more time on freeways than they do with their kids. We're just giving freeways their due respect.
