I should have guessed that. Don't you just hate those liberal elitists who say stuff you don't understand?

"A tumbrel remark is an unguarded comment by an uncontrollably rich person, of such crass insensitivity that it makes the workers and peasants think of lampposts and guillotines."

More tiresome demagoguery about candidates' income and property. - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine

Faux-intellectualism doesn't make you a liberal elitist, just stupid. Very few people know the term, and the reason being that a tumbrel is a cart and the term "tumbrel remark" is an obscure reference attributed to a minor author from the WW2 era.

So you took the trouble to look it up. More than I can say for the other guy. The term's not that obscure. It was used quite recently in a Christopher Hitchens article. You might want to look him up too, as he's actually one of the smarter ones of your political persuasion.

I have a B.A. in English, and I was completely flummoxed by the word.

You'd have been more familiar with the term had you studied the French Revolution. Tumbrels were the carts used to take the condemned such as "let them eat cake" Marie Antoinette to the guillotine.

It's obscure enough that it's not in any dictionary and Slate isn't the New York Times as far as notoriety. A French Revolution specific slang term is obscure and even archaic.
