Work will be in Garden Grove (near Katella and Knott). It looks more like Stanton on the map but address is Garden Grove. I heard Garden Grove is not that great of a place so I am looking for a nice safe place within 30 minutes. I will be renting an apartment that is hopefully under $1400 per month. According to Craigs List there are a lot of them which was a surprise because I thought it would be much more expensive than here (Sacramento).

What kind of community do you want to live in? Urban? Suburban? Blend of both? Beach? There's plenty in that driving range nearby

Near a beach would be nice, but not if that puts me out of my price range. Other than that I am just looking for your typical suburban area with your regular chain stores and restaurants. If there is a place that is safe that is much closer than 30 minutes to the streets I stated then that would be great. If it even matters I am 26/white male and wife is 25/hispanic.

you should be fine anywhere in that area, even in garden grove. even the most crime ridden areas of OC aren't that bad (relatively speaking of course). i would take a trip down to OC to look around for a more specific type of neighborhood you're looking for since nearly of all OC is a suburban area with regular chain stores and restaurants.

1400 puts you in a solid 2bd apt in Los Alamitos, which is about 10 minutes from Katella and Knott(Apartment Row is on Katella east of Los Alamitos Blvd). Should provide everything you're asking for. Craigslist and the Pennysaver are nice places to look, also a few property management cos that handle some of the properties, but mostly just driving down the streets in Apartment Row will be the most productive. The east-west streets that make up Apartment Row are Green, Howard, and Farquhar, starts at Los Alamitos Blvd and ends at Lexington.

Garden Grove itself should work. The intersection of Katella and Knott is the east edge of what is the more affluent part of the city (zip code 92845). But as has been posted before, you will have a large range to choose from, depending on what you want (of course).
