Hi, I currently live out in the boonies of northern Michigan, and I have a job offer coming from W. Anaheim Medical Center on W. Orange. I like to live close to work because I detest commutes of any sizeable length, so I could use some advice/opinions on the medical center itself, as well as the surrounding area in terms of settling down. My salary would be in the 70-75K range, and I'd be looking for an apartment/condo to set up in, as I am a straight male, 41, single, and completely unattached to anyone or anything. Thanks much in advance.

there are other nearby cities you could live in that would be much more interesting within 20-30 minutes of your work. the area around the hospital is mostly older homes (1950s -60s), with older couples and working class families. i also wouldn't want to live that close to knott's berry farm and the traffic that it generates. on your income you could afford to rent a nice place closer to the coast or in more interesting place like fullerton.

Really? Because I wasn't sure 70K in OC would give me that many options. Seems like a lot of people in this forum make 6 figure salaries, which I guess is no suprise for one of the biggest job markets in the country.

with that income, you could easily afford $1200 rent, which will get you a nice 1br apartment in most parts of OC. you won't be buying a 3/2 house in a nice area, but you could certainly afford to rent. also, everything isn't always as it seems around here, just because OC is expensive doesn't mean that everyone here is making loads of cash.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. I actually have a pretty good situation where I am now, but I just can't see myself staying up here as a single guy much longer. Always wanted to live out west, too. We'll see!

Hi Northman,

I would check out Old Towne Orange or Fullerton. Those are the more "happening" areas around here with actual downtowns with bars, restaurants, etc.

As for rent: Fullerton for a nice one bedroom you'll pay somewhere around $1400, and Orange around the same...maybe a little more. Both are college towns, so you'll have a little competition. Buying is also an option, but you'd want to cast a wider net to find something on $70k but it is completely do-able.

If you need any more help, just let me know. I work in real estate and would be happy to help.

Lauryn

Thanks, Lauryn. Hoping the job offer is what I'm looking for. My brother lives up in San Fran and I'm looking there, too. Either the LA or SF metros would be exciting to live in for me, and like I said, I've yet to set up shop on the left coast. I've lived in Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, and Boston before coming up here to northern Mich. I could very well wind up just staying here, but it never hurts to check things out. I've actually never been much of a bar guy, so that's not necessarily something I need to be right around the corner from by any means. OC seems like a nice combo of family oriented communities while still having tons to do.........am I right about that? I don't need to be in the middle of a total party scene, just looking for a nice, fairly peaceful place to live in the big city.

Eh, fooey.....the job fell through. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Anaheim/OC is still high on my list. May be back for more advice in the future. Thanks to all who responded.

Sorry to hear that Northman. I really think you'll like it there. I know I can't wait to get back!
