Has anyone tried filling in a swimming pool or covering it up with something? My husband and I are looking for a house but don't want a pool. What to do if our 'dream home' has one? Drain it and fill with dirt? Can I somehow build a deck over it? Do I need a city permit to any of this? Cost? My husband says it's not as easy as it sounds.

Thanks.

I had a friend that didnt want her pool. She had it drained & filled with dirt. You can tell a pool was once their but it looks good. Pools are nice but expensive to maintain. In so.ca you can use your unheated pool may through oct.

Just don't destroy it because since you didn't make the investment to install it it could add value when you're ready to sell it.

Do you ever see those signs that read "free dirt". Fill 'er up Johnny Cash style.

I first thought of filling the pool in with dirt. I see ads on craigslist from people willing to deliver the dirt even, but shouldn't I break the bottom of pool with a jack hammer or something to provide drainage of some sort?

Would someone really dig out the dirt to re-use the pool? Seems like more trouble than it's worth.

I saw a movie where someone emptied the swimming pool for some skaters. Read that an exposed pool shell like that gets damaged for the sun, weather, etc., though.

I hope I don't get a house with a pool, but if the house is worth it, I think I'll just fill in with dirt and lay decorative brick down to prevent a lot of water from seeping through. Hope that won't look too ghetto.

Thanks for the replies.

To really get rid of it, they will come break the cement, take that away and bring clean fill dirt. I'll bet it would cost a pretty penny, but I don't know.
