I am relocating from upstate New York for work reasons. I am a single, 40 year old guy and am trying to determine the best place to live. Both Newport Beach and Irvine are close to my new workplace. At this point, I've narrowed it down to either Newport Bluffs in Newport Beach or The Village at Irvine Spectrum. I just am really having trouble making a final decision. I don't know where I'd be happier.

I spent a week checking out both areas, but I just can't seem to make a definitive decision. Wherever I end up, I'd like to hopefully be able to make some friends and be able to do things. Aside from economic reasons, could anyone give me some insight?

Given that your single, if you can afford it (and I mean really afford it. Not I'll-eat-beans-and-rice-so-I-can-live-here afford it) I'd say go for Newport. If you live at the spectrum, your basically living in the middle of a large Office park with an outdoor entertainment center in it. There's not much else there right now. Newport has alot more thing for you to do & a much more vibrant (although very shallow & crass) singles scene.

Plus you get nice ocean breezes in Newport that keeps the electric bills down. Irvine, not as much.

Granted you do get Wild Rivers and Irvine Meadows/Verizon Amphitheater within walking distance

You'll have plenty of chances to meet new people. So Cal has great weather year round and numerous outdoor activites.

Newport Beach in general is much, much nicer than Irvine. HOWEVER, I googled "Newport Bluffs" and I see it's right off Macarthur Blvd. near the UCI campus, so that location is going to be much more like Irvine than most of Newport Beach. If you don't have your heart set on living in a huge corporate apartment complex, you can probably do a lot better just by searching on Craigslist. There are plenty of small, individually owned apartment buildings throughout Newport Beach that have much better locations (closer to the ocean and shopping/restaurants/etc.) I lived in the "Westcliff" area, close to 17th Street/downtown Costa Mesa, not far to Balboa Peninsula, close enough to the ocean to have nice breezes blowing through the apartment, etc., and it has easy access to the 55->405 for a pretty painless commute (to southern Irvine in my case).

If you can be more specific about what you're looking for in a home/apartment that would help responses. There is much diversity in both.

What type of environment are you looking for the most? Are you into dating / drinking / entertainment or are you looking for a more family-oriented type of community? They each have their own vibe. I'm partial to Irvine, of course. I've spent time in both areas.
