Clyde Holliday State Park, just west of John Day has a pretty nice campground for both RV and tent camping.

There are quite a few free campgrounds (at least they used to be free) on both BLM and USFS land, but I think you may need to get off of US-26 to get to them. Check out the Ochoco National Forest website Deschutes & Ochoco National Forests

Will go in Sept. Thanks. I have a SUV, can't go on gravel roads. Just back from Deception Pass in WA state. Wonderful, a must see. Want to explore John Day next.

Why not? I thought that kind of stuff is what they were built for?

I have found that if you drive at least three hours away from Portland, you can have that experience more often than not.

Wait until fall when the kids are back in school and the rain starts, and the lesser known campgrounds tend to be empty.

Late September has always been my favorite time for quiet camping.

A tip: Remember the Fall is when deer and elk hunting season start. Some campgrounds close to good hunting areas will fill up for a few weeks.

There is a ban on moving in firewood from out of the area. Check on line to see if The John Day area is included.

If you're headed to the John Day area, do yourself a favor and visit the Kam Wah Chung museum.

It is a little tiny time slice out of Oregon's history. I went there on a whim and am ever so grateful I did.
