Officially (California is not the center of the earth) this is the Bay Area. San Francisco, well we have another name for that place.

I live in a part of Minnesota that is not doing well economically right now either, but I had job offers.
That is Minnesota where people are not flocking to on a daily basis adding to the tremendous competition for jobs. Believe me you will find no one in Oregon who looks down on food service or call center jobs. They are gold in this state.

But just out of curiosity, why did you start this thread asking questions about the job situation? It's pretty obvious you really didn't want to hear what people had to say when it didn't fall within your expectations. Everyone is just stating the facts. With a family, you should be very concerned about what they say rather than having such a dismissive attitude.

Good post, wondered this myself.

I am glad to hear what people have to say. There is some negative being sent my way because I am not local. I am just responding and giving my thoughts and opinions, not meaning to sound dismissive towards any of it. I posted this thread to hear from people living in the area and to see what kind of responses I would get. I have gotten a few very positive direct messages from locals, thank you very much. Like I said it is hard EVERYWHERE right now, but if you set your mind to doing something it will are work out with time. I am not one to give up. I was back in Arizona this last year taking care of my grandmother and it took me close to a month to get a job, because you had thousands of people applying for the same job. We then went to Arkansas to help a family member get situated after my aunt passed away and left behind a 13year old son. I did get a job within 2 weeks of being there. It is now time for us to move to where we have always wanted to be and take care of us. So again thank you everyone posting in this thread and those that have sent me direct messages, we will be heading that way sometime next year

What is it going to take to make you realize, you are making a huge mistake unless you are just coming for the welfare?

Welfare.... I was on assistance when I was 16 for one year while still in school. I have never been on it since, I am 33 years old. I have done everything on my own, I am not one to depend on others. My family is my responsibility, so for you to say that it is pretty jacked up. I think that is probably why many locals do not have jobs, for the welfare... Why work if they are going to have things handed to them. Welfare is used and abused by to many and when someone really needs the help it is hard for them to get it because of the people that abuse the system. I have helped many young adults that I have managed get off the system, because they were raised to depend on it. I resent that statement. Like I said before we are a strong family and when we put our minds to something we will succeed. Everyone makes mistakes it only makes you a stronger person, LIVE AND LEARN!!!!!

Well, that's the Lake Wobegon Effect for you: social connections -- not job opportunities, climate or lifestyle preferences -- are a primary relocation determinant. That's quite different from how most people in the West would look at options for moving. But I have to say, if social connections are so important to you that they would have stymied you from moving in the past, they may also keep you from being happy after you've moved here. I grew up in Minnesota and North Dakota (though left as a teenager) and know how tight-knit the communities there can be. I've known many people from the upper Midwest who relocated to the PNW and left within a year or two because of social climate shock.

Oregonians are more accessible and sociable than Minnesotans when it comes to casual conversation, but Oregonians don't neighbor the way Minnesotans do (in fact, we don't even use the word "neighbor" as a verb out here). You could live in Coos Bay for 10 years and get friendly greetings from dozens of people you know while at the grocery store without ever getting invited to have dinner over at someone's house. People will wave and say "hi," but don't expect someone to come out of their house in the rain with jumper cables when you can't get your car started. It isn't that people aren't friendly; it's just that there's a different ethic of friendliness here than what you might be used to. And that ethic highly values a live-and-let-live attitude -- not something that lends itself to the easy formation of strong interpersonal bonds. Also, you'd be coming from one of the most churchy cultures in the country to one of the least, and that, too, affects the social fabric of the region.

As long as people know what they're getting into and understand that they're not going to find some alternate version of the culture that they grew up with in a distant land, the change in both scenery and regional cultures that comes with moving can be very satisfying. But it seems in the upper Midwest, more than any other part of they country, residents are likely to view their own regional experience as being at the epicenter of what it means to "be American" and have a difficult time adapting to differences in other areas.

I am not going to get into an argument with you. This isn't the place. I have tried to be realistic with you and save you from a sure disaster, but you are that one who knows it all and will persevere where others fail. There are no jobs that will feed a family of seven without social dole available in or around Coos Bay. The few that may come up will go to the long term residents who have been here their whole life, but come on ahead. You certainly know better than the others who came and went. You asked a question and you got honest answers.
Now one more time for you, and all the other dreamers. The Coos Bay Area has no jobs. The cost of living is disproportionably high, even for Oregon. Don’t come here without a job or an income capable of supporting you off the streets and out of the woods for at least a year. Even when things are good the jobs are either highly skilled, professional, or medical, or very low wage menial employment. Those are the facts, and for those with jobs, and those with independent incomes, it is a paradise. For the rest it is welfare hell.
