Wicked Felina, I hope you weren't offended; that wasn't my intention! The suburbs here are very much the province of LDS families -- while they're very polite and helpful, their lives are centered on their church activities, their families and their jobs: there's not much room for people who aren't part of those interlinked circles. I'm not far from the University of Utah, and there's a mindset there that's more like the one we grew up with.

We'd be renting to start: while we've visited friends, that's not the same as living in a place, and I don't know what to expect from the property taxes aside from "LOTS".

Absolutely no offensive taken whatsoever. I'd hoped that Silverfall would chime in because it's she who knows prices/trends/etc. and would have a good grasp of where you could find your new home.

I know some areas of Portland proper where friends lived, similar to what you described, but I don't like them. That's what I was thinking of when I suggested Silverfall would be better able to help.

This looks like a decent, fairly encompassing site to learn about different neighborhoods:
Multnomah Village Real Estate Guide & Homes For Sale in Portland Oregon

PS: When my in-laws lived in Salt Lake City, he had a very hard time finding a job. The one and only reason he was hired was that their neighbor was a church elder and vouched for him. didn't matter what his skill set was. Sounds like it hasn't changed much there, if it ever will. Good news: You'll love Oregon, I bet.
