I live outside of Burns and been here 9 years but have been coming here for over 40 years. I have never wanted to live any place else. The economy, like most rural places, isn't good but the people are great! If you like wide open spaces, sunshine 300+ days a year, mountains, desert, horses, cows, and a variety of wildlife, you will love it here!

We have maybe 2 weeks combined total of temp's of 100 in the summer and maybe 2 weeks combined total of temps below 0 in the winter. This past winter (current winter, I guess) has been the worst in many years for snow but we should flourish come warmer weather and spring with green grass.

May is beautiful here, the refuge is awesome, the Steens are wonderful, it's just a 2 hour drive to "big" stores and we have over 10,000 square miles with around 7000 people in the county.

150 miles to the nearest shopping? Is that 150 miles one way or round trip?

Well, if you consider Bend "nearest shopping", then 130 miles, ONE WAY! Portland is much further.

Burns is probably the most remote town in Oregon. I'm sure there are plenty of people that are happy to live there, but please know that this town really is in the middle of nowhere. A few banks, a couple of motels, and even a McDonalds! But really, that is about it. (Certainly, not to belittle the farmers and others who keep this small town goin').

Not quite--it actually IS the shopping center for other much smaller towns...Frenchglen, Fields, Andrews, etc.

Burns isn't quite the end of the world, but you can see it from there...I love the area!

Still in the desert. Small. Losing a bit of population slowly. Isolated but different environments and cities a few hours away. Low income. Cheap property. Safe on violent crime but above average on property crime. Not bad in winter.

It has become a motel stop for many, as many routes from NorCal and Nevada to Eastern WA leave Burns as a logical stop. These motels probably prop up the community in big ways, (atleast before the pandemic). But I recently drove through and the rates were high, because occupancy was also high. I would recommend Best Western and America's Best as two that offer nice rooms and amenities. Restaurants are limited, but there are some options. Gas is way expensive. It really is in the middle of nowhere. However, on cable tv you get both Denver and Portland TV stations!

Yep and it has been that way for atleast a decade. Actually it is all the Portland stations but just two Denver stations, KUSA and KCNC. I think the Denver stations are there because of some translators are in the mountain time zone. It is weird that you can watch local Denver news from 1,000 miles away!
