I am moving to the area to go to Culinary School and were considering Oregon City but curious as to if you Oregonians had any suggestions on any quaint little towns that would be close enough to Portland without having to be in the "city'.

I would appreciate any suggestions and why.

There's Forest Grove, a classic college town, but that's even further out than OC. You'd have to really like commuting. Ditto for Newberg & McMinnville. Sherwood has been swallowed by the growth of Tigard & Tualatin but still has a cute old town square. Milwaukie might work for you.

There are lots of quaint little neighborhoods inside the Portland city limits also. Places like Sellwood or Multnomah Village don't feel like the "city".

Where is the culinary school located?

Is this the culinary school downtown at the Galleria? Will you be taking public transportation or driving? That may influence your decision as to where to live. There are suburbs that have downtowns and nice features but you don't want to move to where commuting is a pain.

Parking in the area is not exactly cheap, especially as a student, so I'd highly suggest you do public transportation thing. But that is going to limit your areas to live. I'd suggest for ease, to live within a short walking distance of the Max line.

But the Max line is long - you could live all the way out in Hillsboro or Gresham.
Or take a bus downtown - my wife did it from Multnomah Village for twenty years.

Yep, and it seems every time I'm on the MAX, there are culinary students riding too.

I still remember the first time I drove through Multnomah Village. It was a wonder than a different era could survive like that in the middle of a large city. I was charmed.
