My husband and I are original Oregonians....lol We moved out eleven years ago to Florida. While it's been fun it's time to come home. We are looking at Coos Bay and the surrounding area along with Brookings. I've read some of the older post and was surprised to find many different opinions. What we want to know is it really that bad our good. After living in Florida a little peace and quiet would be greatly appreciated......not looking for the garden of eden, but a nice area where out kids can come and visit, have fun and bring the grandbabies. Work is needed but we are not looking to make out first million no time for job stress..........please advise us of your honest opinions, ideas our thoughts. Just saying we want to relax, have fun, camp, hike, bike and east some good food. Thank you...

Brookings has the best weather, Coos Bay has an airport. The nearest airport to Brookings is Crescent City, CA

You need to consider what would bring the children, grandchildren for a visit.

Indeed. The coast is very isolated. Brookings is a 6-7 hour drive from the closest major airport hub (PDX or SFO) and a minimum 2-hr. drive to get to a city with more than 10,000 inhabitants. Be wary of overcompensating when trying to get out of the Rat Race.

Best fit for the Oregon coast: loves overcast skies with abundant rain and wind, and daytime temperatures that typically run from upper 40's to lower 60's. Doesn't like traditional summers. Retired with a reliable pension, has no need to work and has no dependents. Loves fishing, hunting, hiking and other rugged outdoor pursuits and has little need for arts and cultural activities, shopping and fine dining. Doesn't travel much. Self reliant and conservative.

Worst fit for the Oregon coast: loves sunshine and calm weather with daytime temperatures in the mid 70's to upper 80's. Favorite season is summer. Is in one's prime working years, needs a steady job and has kids in school. Relies on some government services. Likes to go on several trips each year. Has a progressive political world view and enjoys patronizing art and culture venues. Is a foodie and enjoys recreational shopping.

While the Oregon Coast obviously has majestic scenery, lots of parks, and plenty of beaches, it is vital to take a closer look before choosing to relocate. Jobs are... leaving! No new industry to replace what's been lost. Port is slow at best (good at spending though) and the cities make lame attempts at attracting tourists while trying desperately to avoid the issues keeping people away.

Hospitals have very poor ratings, and finding a good doc is next to impossible. If you do - they'll either leave, quit, or retire. Schools are... hideous right now. They just did another school shuffle, making 4th - 8th grade middle school. Every school here is "at risk" - if that matters to you. Hey... they can get free & reduced lunch and breakfast!

Our beaches used to be pristine, but my last trip out it looked like a garbage dump. Rusty nails, condoms, glass - you see they still allow some beach fires here, and people act like idiots and expect someone else to pick up after them.

We have insanely beautiful parks and recreational areas, but I don't feel safe after all that's been happening of late. Our headlines are incredibly depressing - and generally there's always more to the story than what's being told.

If you're bent on moving to the Oregon Coast, regrettably I would suggest even Winchester Bay over Coos Bay right now. Florence is nice, clean, and close to major shopping. Beautiful old-town waterfront, and lots of parks and beaches (with sirens for tusnami warnings). Bandon is nice, but... Brookings has the nicest weather, seemingly best attitude, and they're getting a new medical center. It does little good to live near a hospital if you do not trust your family to their care!

Wish I could heartily encourage you to move here, but we're still trying to figure out how to get out! At least one of our children and their family have left. The other one WANTS to. I'm sure we'll follow suit... that is if we could ever find anyone willing to buy a house here. Real estate (both commercial and residential is plentiful) - for sale signs everywhere!
