I'm looking to get a 1 bedroom apartment. I want to live alone, no more roommates!

I was accepted into the Winter Semester 2012, so I'll be moving down there sometime in late December, early January.

I have looked on craigslist and some online housing websites, but I'm curious how soon do I make arrangements? Can I reserve an apartment this early in the year?

I mean, how does that work exactly?

Being a college town where demand dramatically outstrips supply, most places were rented out months ago. There will, however, be a lot of students who finish/quit/get kicked out this fall, so some places should open up. Keep an eye on IPMG and Pinion and also check out some of the places that don't require leases (there tends to be a lot more moving in and out at those, but you'll only find out about apartments about a month in advance).

You might also look at Albany (probably also filled up by now, but maybe you'll get lucky) and Lebanon (maybe too far away).

Oh, and in case you haven't read the local paper much, stay away from Bula/Schoning. They have quite the reputation for charging outlandish fees, dragging tenants into court (amusingly, they also used to charge a fee for this), failing to make repairs (like no heat in winter, faulty wiring, ceilings caving in - there was a rather drawn out story in the paper in which they refused to make repairs for something like 6 months, eventually the city decided to demolish the place so they fixed it up), and seem to routinely face foreclosure and have run-ins with the IRS (most recently to the tune of owing 3.9 million in back taxes).
