So, I see numerous state campgrounds on the Oregon Coast and I was wondering if anyone had any input as to which ones are car camping friendly, meaning I will not have a tent and will be crashing in my car.

I will probably be driving down from Astoria to Newport, or maybe Yachats.

Thanks!

Pay your campground fee and park in a designated camping spot. No problem.

If you mean you are contemplating not paying for a campsite, but just pulling over somewhere and sleeping in your car, forget it. The local cops in EVERY OR coastal town, as well as the Highway Patrol, are bored at night with no speeding tickets to issue, so they amuse themselves by rousting everyone who is trying to grab a night's sleep in their vehicle. The original intention of the NO SLEEPING regulations was to drive RVers into the $75/night RV campgrounds, when they were perfectly happy just parking and going to sleep for the night--a tactic that produced no revenue for the aforementioned small towns. So trust me, you CAN'T just crash in your car. Anywhere.

However, if you manage to find a campsite (and the good news is, there are plenty of state and NFS campgrounds), nobody cares if you sleep in your car rather than putting up a tent. Expect to spend $22-24/night for the privilege.

In years gone by when we've been traveling in Oregon, we have gotten some shuteye in Rest Area's. The way i understand it you can spend 12 hours, out of 24 hours time, in the Rest Area.
