Another try at a politically correct nanny law.
Studs save lives.
It should be YOUR option whether to have studs or not.
If the concern is road wear, studded tire users should pay for it with a stiff tax, not having the choice taken away.

What's next? Elimination of plastic bags at grocery stores?

Do they? I'm seriously curious, I've never seen a study about the safety of different traction devices on various surfaces.

I think studded tires should be banned in Western Oregon, but not in Central or Eastern Oregon. Those in the west rarely deal with conditions that require studded tires. And when it snows, everything is closed anyway! But I think those in all other parts of Oregon should be able to use them. I lived in Bend for a while, and they helped tremendously in getting around.

I would be for the ban if the state's solution was to clear snow from the roads. I'm originally from Michigan and used the same tires year round without a second thought. I tried that my first winter in Bend three years ago and regretted it. The driving conditions were almost always miserable with the setup I had.

It's frustrating that one is basically required to either have 4 wheel drive or some kind of different winter tire setup to get around here but I've accepted this as the way it is here and I deal with it. Really what it boils down to is, if they don't want Oregonians using studded tires, don't give us a reason to put them on in the first place. All we want to do is arrive in one piece
