Jason, I don't know what your agenda is. It seems it's about "radical anti-growth agenda" and college students being disillusioned by it and making parties that are not near any other college town's parties, and I should be thankful that my little kids only are kept up 'til 1 AM because if they were somewhere else .. What the hell does Corvallis' anti-growth policy have to do with college students' parties?

I've lived in Corvallis a long time. I really have no clue what you are getting at. If we can stretch the logic a long way, maybe we could make a connection. But you aren't making much sense as of now.

And if you say I should get out more, then how come I've lived in Bend, Corvallis, and more recently the Seattle area, and I still don't get what you are saying? I've lived in NJ too, and by the way I grew up in India. I've also visited BC Canada about 10 times, and I've driven across Canada and back. Okay, I need to "get out more" according to you. You who maybe are the one without a clue or who has a different agenda than what I started this conversation with.

I've been in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Nairobi, Munich, Madrid, Rome, Brussels, Bordeaux, Paris, Athens, Mexico City, Honolulu, and a lot more places. And I need to get out more. Thank you for enlightening me, Jason.

Oregon State law requires all cities to maintain a 20 year inventory of buildable land within their urban growth boundary. The opposition to expanding the UGB always comes from people outside the city limits who don't want their property included, because that will bring subdivisions to their neighborhood.

Construction stalled in Bend because real estate values in California tanked, leaving Californians with less money to spend on vacation homes in Bend.

Setting aside most of your angry, unhinged rant about nothing in particular (reminds me of the anti-growth rants that show up in the paper all the time)...

Radical anti-growth agenda = fewer jobs in town, which has resulted in the town's permanent population shrinking and houses that were formerly owner-occupied being inhabited by students. Also, fewer students working and thus fewer students paying the bills on their own.

Radical anti-growth agenda = fewer housing choices for students, so less self separating.

This is a problem that exists primarily in the heads of people such as yourself (if you don't believe me, perhaps instead of spouting off lists of random places, you should visit some other college towns or at least browse through the crime log section of their newspapers). What problems there are here, are made worse by people who try to stop students from having suitable places to live, and who try to drive away business, ensuring that the population will continue to shrink and more and more houses will be rented to students as their owners flee Corvallis for greener pastures.

Of course, one could avoid all of the "problems" associated with living near the university by simply making the choice not to live right next to the school. Unfortunately, people think they should get to live one or two blocks from campus and still be entitled to absolute silence and a student-free environment.

Appreciate this thread. It's of interest to me because my husband and I were strongly considering settling in the Corvallis area. We are retired, have a dog and 2 cats and were hoping to find a reasonably nice rental there within the next year or two--is this going to be next to impossible?

Next-to-impossible, yes. But it only takes the right thing to happen once. In other words, don't give up, but it will probably take some work if it is going to happen.

Since you have time to plan it, I'd suggest looking for a place in the summer, when there are more vacancies.

Apartment rentals, particularly near campus, are hard to come by. House rentals not so bad. The best time to look is in the summer, when most college students are out of town and the vacancy rate is sky high.

I would recommend starting in spring, when lease renewals go out to existing tenants. Month to month places will obviously have a lot more available during summer, but leased places will have a lot gone by the time summer rolls around.

I have similar questions to what's being discussed...I am considering OSU for grad school starting fall 2012. Main issue is I currently live on the east coast and would be making a major move to do so...so apt. shopping will be difficult. My plan is to come to Corvallis for a few days/a week sometime in late spring/early summer, hopefully secure housing (apt rental or space in a house), and do the actual move in late summer.

can anyone give a best guess as to when visiting and actually securing housing might be most likely? Would do some online shopping before actually coming out...don't want housing to not be available yet but don't want to miss the "rush."I'm not sure how much I can (or want to) get solidified from across the country...so I think in-person shopping will be best. Any info or past experiences would be greatly appreciated. thanks
