I love southern Oregon . I just have my perceptions I guess. There are alot of good people here . There are alot of people also who seem to enjoy the drug/welfare mentality culture a little too much. I definitely am down with "live and let live" mentality. As long as you pull your cart and mow your own lawn.
In the last few years we have witnessed a huge increase in the amount of burglaries . Seems as if everyone is on edge about security , including me. Camera systems, house sitters, big dogs, fences , gates , etc... That is something that has been brought in ,cause when we were kids here , our home did not really have locks!
Car keys were in the car!
The schools , sheriff and entire county budget was intact. There were decent jobs related to the timber industry that workers could proudly show up year after year , making a solid living at.
Yes there were Rednecks here, but also quite the hippy commune culture also. Mostly hardworking family people though.
Most of you probably don't remember Litton industries.?

I moved to Grants Pass Oregon back in 1997 and my Step dad and brother told me Grants Pass is a very poor and depressing town and the only money that comes into the town is through the retired people moving into it. I did not feel it untill August of 2012 I also heard that Grants Pass is 10 years behind of where the rest of the U S is I have experenced that there is a lot of in securety and depression here as well because of lack of jobs other people have said the same thing through communitation and inter acting.

Its a nice place to come to for vacation.

Living in town is not so good. I think Grants Pass is a more interesting town than Medford. The downtown area looks kind of quaint and has some interesting shopping but Medford definitely has a lot more big stores. I would not want to live in Medford city but any of the adjacent towns are good. You can find a house that has an acre or more of land pretty easily and the scenery is pretty. Medical services in Medford are much better than G.P. and both have descent college opportunities. G.P. is closer to the ocean.(that is a big plus) I live outside Medford in a very nice area. I see a lot of green and a lot of cows. The Applegate valley is beautiful but maybe a 40 min to hour drive to Medford. Ashland (20 min drive from Medford is very artsy and lots of culture if that is what you are looking for. It is expensive to live there. but schools are good and it is fun to walk around town and everybody is in to natural foods and good coffee. The whole Rogue Valley is a great place to live. Welcome.

I've now been in Grants Pass for a year and 4 months... I am an East coaster so take some of my observations with the lens of someone coming from Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I have been in Oregon now for 3 years altogether in Portland prior to comiK9TMng here. The good parts... It is beautiful... The mountains are amazing The Valleys like Applegate are wonderful...

The bad parts... For me... It is very very conservative... I understand that it has become more Progressive in the last several years but for someone coming in from Massachusetts it feels very RED to me... well I enjoy my neighbors as we are similar in worldview as mentioned... I have not connected with anyone else in this town... I enjoy my work and my co-workers but we definitely don't see the world in the same way

Sorry for the three posts... If politics worldview and Progressive values are important to you don't move here... It is important to me so I plan to move to Portland OR Seattle as soon as I can... I would go back to Boston if my daughter would go back but she doesn't like the winters

Expecting big city east coast progressive politics in a rural area simply because the largest city in the state is somewhat progressive was never a good idea. That is true of Massachusetts as well - while there is a plastic bag ban (your example) under consideration in Mass, it still hasn't passed state-wide and a number of smaller cities are fighting the bill.

There's also Ashland, a little blue (or would it be Green?) island not far away.
