Hi. New member here. My niece is thinking of renting a house on Dakota Avenue in West Medford. The renter said it was an area with lots of activity around it. Any knowledge of this area of town? She's 20 and it'll be her first time away from home in Louisville, KY. She's adventurous but we need her to be safe! Thanks for any info you can provide.

Also, if W. Medford is a problem, what is a good area to look for rentals of small houses or apartments in Medford? THANKS!

That's... kind of a rough area.

What is her budget?

Medford is like Anchorage in that the city itself may not be all that pretty, but it's the gateway to so much natural beauty. To the OP, if your wife can get me hired at TJs, she can stay with me until you find a house! Only half kidding Seriously, I do have my application all filled out and waiting I rent in the area of the S. Medford high school and so far have never had any problems. There are some really nice areas of housing around here. As far as commuting from Grant's Pass, I realize 25 miles won't seem like much to someone from S.D. (I lived there for 1-1/2 years when newlywed, my now-ex husband had to drive to his construction jobs up to 2 hours each way sometimes!) but I got spoiled in the smaller city of Anchorage (a big reason I chose Medford is size) I definitely don't want to commute any farther than 5 miles. For my new (part time) job I drive 3 miles from my home along beautiful South Stage Rd with a smile on my face at the gorgeous scenery. And as soon as I fix my bike I'll be riding. Hope this isn't too gushy but I am happy to be here!
This is an old post, I realize... but are you still reading the forum? I am a former Anchorage resident looking to relocate to Medford as you have. Sure could use some helpful insights on jobs, rental neighborhoods, etc.

I haven't checked in with City Data for a long time but got an email notification of your post.
I'm still in Medford but for economic reasons will move to Eugene in about a year and merge households with my daughter who recently got a good job there. I wanted her to move here with me but Medford is too small for her. There seems to be plenty of minimum or slightly above min. wage jobs on Craigslist. Although living costs will seem SO much cheaper after Alaska, the wages are correspondingly lower, also. Harry & David's hires several thousand seasonal workers every fall, that's going on right now. I have a job at a local winery where I do a bit of everything (general labor) plus I work seasonally at a candy store. Found my place through Oak Tree rental agency. 2 bdrm, 2-1/2 bath townhouse for $850 plus G&E. Neighborhood is OK, near the new South Medford high school. We have a Trader Joes and REI now so that's awesome. The weather is a 100% improvement over Anchorage (one of my main criteria for choosing southern Oregon) Summers can get hot! We had a month of 90s and triple digits this year. But that's better than 7 months of winter with a couple summer days in the 70s--although Anchorage did have a rare lovely summer this year.
Any other more detailed questions, just ask.

Thank you so much for the info. It almost sounds as though it would be better economically to look into Eugene??

The Willamette Valley (Portland in the north, Eugene in the south) is the population center in Oregon and therefore the most likely place to find work, particularly the Portland metro area. Most people who choose Medford and the Rogue Valley over the Willamette Valley do so because they want a sunnier climate with less rain and a smaller population base (though there are certainly small towns in the Willamette Valley as well). The problem with Medford employment is that it isn't as diverse an employment market, meaning that it lacks a lot of the job categories that Portland has.

For access to jobs, Portland would be the first choice in the state - although Oregon, as a state, still has a fairly high employment rate, and the people in the Portland subforum here will tell you that it's not always easy to get a job in Portland, particularly if you don't have a niche, sought-after skill.
