Would you say most people you know have been to Canada or Mexico at some point in their lives? It seems like a lot of people I know have been to BC at least once, and Mexico is a popular vacation spot but not as popular as Hawaii probably.

I believe Hawaii is more popular. There are four or five direct flights a day from PDX airport.

BC is just a short drive away. I don't know anyone who would fly there unless they were in a great hurry. Mexico is a lot farther and the places you want to go aren't on the border, which means more driving, so air travel there is more popular. Or cruises.

Seems like the people I know, when they travel, they want to go someplace warm and sunny. So they head to Hawaii or the Florida Keys or Bahamas, Jamaica, or recently Bora Bora or Thailand seems to be the "in" places to go.

Not so much Mexico lately, because everytime someone mentions Mexico the first words you hear next are: "Ooooh I don't think it's safe to go there anymore...." People don't even like San Diego anymore because it's too close to the border. I'm from Texas and Padre and Galveston and the like aren't spoken of like they used to be, either.

I still know a lot of people in Oregon who take trips to Mexico for beach vacations. Puerto Vallarta seems to be the main destination, and then Cabo San Lucas or the Yucatan. All these areas are fine as far as safety goes(honestly I've been to Mexico City in the last two years, and I was fine there as well, despite all the hype)--it's not like you're going to Juarez or Laredo or Sinaloa. It's usually those beach resorts in Mexico or Hawaii that I hear about people going to.

British Columbia on the other hand seems to be a place where people take short trips to Vancouver or Victoria or up to Whistler to go skiing. Despite it's proximity though, I don't hear that often that people are taking a longer trip to BC that often. Reason being, that BC is similar in a lot of ways to Oregon(and Washington) as far as weather and environment. Often the weather in Vancouver in the summer is worse than Portland. Mexico and Hawaii on the other hand are seen as warm places to escape from the Oregon weather and relax on a beach.

That's good to know Deezus. I LOVE Cabo. It's my favorite place in Mexico to go. It's just that everytime I mention it here (in Oregon) people go "Oh but Mexico is so dangerous now..."... but maybe they don't know where Cabo is? It's nowhere near the border... lol

I'd say most are more likely to visit Canada. But it just depends on the person. I have one side of the family (siblings) that I don't believe has ever been to Canada, but visit Mexico. The other side, the opposite. I've been to both, but Canada much more often. Mostly because it's closer.

Default Canada

Visited Canada twice while I lived in Oregon and once from Texas. I have lived nearer to Mexico since 2006 not once over the border
