I am considering going to University of Oregon in Eugene or Portland State University. I would not want to live directly in Portland... only outside of Portland. Anyway these are my requirements for moving:

1. Good school district for my 5 year old daughter
2. Outside of the city. I love to garden and I love any place that has a good amount of nature... It could be close to the city, but I want to feel as if I am NOT in the city...... if that makes sense?
3. A city that would be easy to find a job in. My BF is graduating college this year and his degree is in business. It is very important that we are able to find a job.
4. Not crazy expensive
5. SAFE area to raise my daughter

Those are my main requirements for finding a city. I have driven through Oregon many times and find it breath taking, but I want to make sure to do my research!! Anyway PLEASE let me know if you have good suggestions for cities Also if you happen to know anything about the 2 Universities I listed above feel free to comment! I am looking to major in Environmental science. THANK YOU!!!

I would think Eugene is clearly the place to go given those parameters.

Questions:

1) Renting or buying?
2) How far do you want to drive to campus? Do you want to take mass transit (recommended if you are going to PSU)?
3) Does BF mind taking "any ol' job" or does he want something in his field? What is his field?
4) What do you define as "expensive?"
5) When you say "garden", do you mean a backyard plot or are we talking acreage?
6) When you say "outside of Portland", do you mean outside of the core downtown concrete jungle? Would a suburb suffice or do you really want to live in rural Oregon?

Also, you are the expert on your needs in an Environmental Science program so make sure you do your homework. Look at the reputations of the professors and the department in general. Some folks may have some input, but ultimately only you know all your requirements in a program. Good luck.

I think either one would work for you. Though in Portland you'll have to deal with more traffic and hipsters, and in Eugene you'll have to deal with way-bad fashion choices (lots of bedazzled jeans and cowboy boots lately) and mullets and crazy Duck fans. (Though they prolly have those in PDX, too... but the super-high concentration of them in Eugene is often off-putting, even alarming at times...). It's kind of a toss-up. I love Eugene, but I wouldn't mind living on the outskirts of Portland, either.

This helps a lot, huh? So glad I could help!

I'm editing to add - have you checked out OSU in Corvallis? I thought they had a really good environmental science program, or so I have heard.
