All my months of research and I'm more confused now than I was when I started.

Started with Silverton but a bit pricey.

Newberg is great but housing is more expensive, and hubbys job is down south in Springfield. Could make it work but unsure i wanna be that close to Portland.

Checked out Salem but not keen on living near a maximum state prison and crime seems rougher than id like.

Thought I saw Eugene was more expensive than Salem.

Wanna buy a house but can't sign my name until I feel really good about a safe great place..

Keep this up and the lower I go I'll be living in CA.

UGG...

Why don't you want to be that close to Portland? I don't believe most people would consider Springfield close to Portland. Forest Grove, which you are asking about in another post is closer.

Honestly due to situations in my life, I am a bit hypersensitive to crime and I think all the things I'm hearing about crime in Oregon is getting to me..just want to find a safe little town..

Well to begin with Forest Grove is 25 miles from Portland and Springfield is 111 miles. If you are concerned about crime, I suggest you google crime statistics in both towns. I don't know anything about Springfield but I know that Forest Grove is a pretty suburb of Portland, very leafy and green. It has older homes well kept. It a lot of cultural activities. I think it is a pretty upscale place to live.

Very good question. If you lived in Forest Grove and he works in Springfield, that's over a 136 mile commute for him. Would he really want to do that? I think you should just take a chance and pick a town. After all, crime can happen anywhere. No place can be absolutely guaranteed safe. Chances are you will be fine.

Antelope Oregon might be a good choice. Low crime, low cost of living, good neighbors. You can hit the store up in Mitchell or Shaniko for your monthly grocery run.

The last thing an escaped convict wants to do is hang out near a prison.

You may be hypersensitive. You are searching Oregon, try searching where you live now. You may be surprised at what you find.

Re-reading the OP, I think the "too close to Portland" referred to Newberg, not Springfield.
