Hey everyone,

My husband and I are wanting to move to the Oregon Coast. We have been looking at Brookings. I've been reading all of the comments that people have posted about Brookings. I myself have never been there. We currently live in Montana and I really want to get back to the ocean. I have two kids ages 13 and 11. Can someone please let me know if this would be a good place to raise kids and what it's really like there? Are there descent places to shop and work? I need all the feedback I can get. Thanks

If you live in Rural Montana the Kids will be happy in Brookings. Big City kids hate it. Never make a decision on any destination until you have been there and spent a week or so. You don't say what kind of work you need. Don't expect much.

Thanks, well I do pretty much anything as far as work goes plus Im 100% bilingual. My husband works for Fastenal. I guess my question is: is Brookings a depressing place? I mean are there things to do like for kids, or would I have to always go down to like Crescent City?

I like Brookings. It seems like a nice town. Gets a lot of rain, though. About 78" a year.

No, there are not a lot of things for kids to do in Brookings. It's more of a retirement town. And don't expect Crescent City to be more kid friendly then Brookings. I just did "kid friendly" and "brookings oregon" in Google and came up with seven results, four of which are parks, two museums, and "sports fishing," were on the list.

Since you're likely already from a small town, perhaps your kids know how to make their own fun already.

If your kids are not outdoors types who make their own fun and they are the kind who need things to do, consider some other location. My kids loved it, but even today they are not mall rats.

I wood have loved growing up along the coast. There are freshwater lakes/ponds to fish, BLM land to explore, rivers to explore, Redwood forest nearby, kayaking, surf fishing, crabbing, clams, finding agates along the beach, driftwood, bottles, fishing floats, much awesome beauty to see, sunsets, sunrise, etc, etc

Thank you all for the input. I will take into consideration all your comments and maybe take a trip down there after the new year. I'd like to see for myself.

The reason my DH and I didn't move over to the coast, which we love, is medical care. I didn't get the impression that it was very good. If I'm wrong, someone is more than welcome to correct me. We are in Ashland and Medford and have been very pleased with what is available here.

You would be correct.

Although Coos Bay has a good hospital, and so does Florence.

But Doctors are very hard to come by, and with Medicare or Medicaid, forget it.
