We are planning a trip to Oregon this summer and plan on visiting the Tillamook cheese factory. Has anyone done this? Also, we will be staying somewhere on the coast in a timeshare. What would be the best time of the year to go there, specifically during the summer as far as weather? Also, any other opinions on site seeing? Thanks

You should make a visit to The Blue Heron Cheese shop and have a picnic if its sunny. It is maybe 5 minutes south of Tilamook. The tour of Tilamook Cheese is somewhat disapointing as it is self-guided, but not bad. Its basically a place you visit and enjoy, but it has relatively low replay value. I've been there twice. The ice cream shop at Tilamook cannot be missed. I live in Cannon Beach and all the Oregon locals know that its not really about the cheese-its about the ice cream. Tilamook ice cream is only available in the Northwest and has a reputation for being more expensive but quite possibly the best ice cream you'll ever have.

The Tillamook Country Smoker factory outlet is good to visit, it's about fifteen minutes north of Tillamook.

You should drive out to Cape Meares. The beach at Ocean Side is pretty cool, including a long tunnel that goes to a more secluded beach. Both are great for agate collecting. North of there is the Bayocean spit where the town of Bayocean fell into the water. The area is now a nice park and wild life area.

South from Cape Meares is Cape Lookout, another great park with some incredible views, and you can continue all the way down to Pacific City.

And even further south is Neskowin, home of one of the "Ghost Forests" on the Oregon Coast.

In Tillamook itself, visit the history museum there, and do not miss the air museum. Even if you're not into air planes, the huge hanger is pretty cool to see, as are some of the smaller exhibits inside.

Unlike parts of Oregon on the lee side of the Coast Range, there isn't much seasonality on the coast and there isn't any time of the year when the probability of good weather there is solid. Whatever the seasons may be inland, the coast will be cool and foggy if there is an on-shore flow and cool, breezy, and sunny if there is an off-shore flow. The highest likelihood of calm, off-shore flow days is in September and October. You could have beautiful weather in July and August, but it could also be damp and overcast. Rain is unlikely in the summer months, but that doesn't mean you'll get sun, necessarily. Be prepared for anything.

Commercial Cheese production in Tillamook is now done in Boardman. The "Cheese Factory" is now a tourist operation only, with warehousing for cheeses made in Boardman Oregon, and packaged in Mountain Home Idaho or Salt Lake City Utah.

West of Tillamook is Netarts Bay. It's a federal estuary, and you don't even need a fishing license to clam or crab there. North of Tillamook is Oswald West State Park, the absolute gem of the state park system. The only thing you see from the highway is the parking lot. It's about a 400 yard walk to the beach, and you have miles of hiking trails to Cape Falcon (short walk) and the top of Neakahnie Mountain (longer, steeper walk.) Cape Lookout is spectacular on a clear day, as is 101 on the face of Neakahnie.

I thought the shellfish license requirement was statewide?
