Are you talking about heat pumps, hot water heaters, kitchen ranges, or what? All homes here have electrical service. Some also have natural gas; others do not. Many homes that have gas service still have electric ranges, clothes dryers and water heaters.

Without doing a real analysis gas is preferred heating. It really depends on what your assumptions are about the cost of natural gas vs electric and BTUs. Heat pumps are very popular, our electric rates quite reasonable.

My preference partially based on cost. Gas for heat, Gas for hot water, I prefer to cook with gas. The stove doesn't run the hours like a heater or water heater. One plus for gas is when the power goes out you still have hot meals!

Electric heat makes me think of good old baseboards. I am sure the heat pumps are much more efficient.

Natural gas isn't available in our area, so we had to bring in propane to run the stove top - that's how much I prefer a gas cooktop to an electric one. The stove is actually a combo unit so that the oven is electric, even though the top is gas.

The gas also run the "portrait" gas direct-vent fireplace in our bedroom, which is nice and toasty on a cold night. With only those two uses, 100 gallons of propane (around $2.12 a gallon when I filled it last fall) lasts 2 years.

When I lived on Bainbridge Island we used propane for heat, hot water, fireplace, and we had a combo stove top such as PNW-type-gal. Natural gas wasn't available.

Gas is the only way to cook. Even if you have to go propane. Gas is best for everything except lights unless you don't have Natural Gas available.
