I will be spending 2 wks soon looking for a place to live and eventually build.

I plan on driving around Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland, Roesburg, Eugene and outside of Portland Just to get a feel for the areas. Maybe drive up the Oregon coast. I'm looking for a scenic place close to good fishing to build a Cabin / House on a couple acres. Average priced area. 55 yr. old self employed single artist.

Not looking for fancy, touristy, trendy or expensive places to eat.
More like where the locals eat good food. Famous for the area stuff. Casual.
Esp, Seafood. Sandwich places, Sushi, Italian, Taco stand, ect, really open to anything.
More on the healthy side but if fantastic, it doesn't have to be.

And thanks for the help.

Also if you can recommend areas to look at that fits my requirements for living place would be greatly appreciated.

Outside of Portland is a vast area. And how far outside of Portland? Do you include suburbs?

Portland area itself has one of the most amazing food scenes in the US, one that in my opinion rivals NYC, SF and LA.

No set rules on how far. I wouldn't want to be to isolated, 10 miles to a town with supplies. Portland ( I think ) is a little more rainy than southern Oregon, is that correct?

and being semi close to both Portland and SF is part of the reason for the Oregon location. I'm a foodie / good cook having lived in NYC, LA, Italy, Paris. Not fancy fo fo food, inexpensive great food.
Oregon farmers markets are famous i hear, can't wait.
Also Crabs Crabs & more Crabs.

Dallas, OR vicinity actually may be a good place to look. When I look at MLS listings for land it appears that a couple builders have lots tied up but I saw a couple at $27,000 with water and natural gas available that are not builder controlled. Note that those didn't mention sewer so expect to have it perk'd for septic system.

Grants Pass has a surprising number of reasonably priced gourmet restaurants. Check the yellow pages. I can't remember any names, but have tried several and never been disappointed. It's the only place I have ever had a reasonably priced gourmet Japanese meal.

Ashland has a great collection of restaurants too, some more expensive than others. What's the name of the pizza place that uses a real wood fired pizza oven?

If you head inside Portland, be sure to check out the food carts. My favorite is Viking Soul Food.

Why?

"In terms of sanitation and how the food is handled, the carts are held to the same standards as restaurants and receive twice-yearly inspections, according to the Multnomah County Health Department."

How to Open a Food Cart in Portland

"When construction is done and you are ready to open, complete a mobile food unit license application and submit to Multnomah County Environmental Health Department. An Environmental Health Specialist will then do a pre-opening inspection to help you with any last minute adjustments and then you are good to go! After that you will get a visit from an Environmental Health Specialist twice a year. "

Oregon Secretary of State Archives Division

"(1) Violations that are observed during any sanitation inspection by the Local Public Health Authority shall be described in the space provided on a form approved by the Authority by citing the Oregon Revised Statute or Oregon Administrative Rule number violated, and by giving a brief statement of the specific problem and required corrections."

If you have direct knowledge of violations, please report them. This goes for Food Carts AND Brick and Mortar restaurants.
