I have been reading threads on this site for about 6 months as I am trying to learn as much as possible about the medford area. I have learned that most people do not like people moving from CA. I live in Sacramento and am looking for a nice place to raise our two kids ages 5 and 1. We are also looking for more affordable housing and a bit slower lifestyle. We would not mind living within 10 minutes of Medford if someone could please help me and tell me which of the smaller cities or best. Most of you agree that I need to avoid white city. Thank you for that. Which are safer with better schools and more affordable housing? We are looking for a 4-5 bedroom home with a decent lot around 350K. I also would like to know which areas would get us out of the medford haze I read so much about. Although, I have to say we don't want somewhere that rains more than 25" yr. We will be taking a trip up there soon and would like to know which areas to tackle first. Thanks to all.

Eagle Point or Central Point have some nice homes in the price range you are looking at. Rogue River and Grants Pass are 20-30 min. from Medford.
Phoenix to the South has some homes being built, and of course existing in your target price.

Don't worry about the California thing, it is way overblown on these forums. Most don't care where you are from, most people are from somewhere else up here.

best wishes

freedom

Default outer areas of medford

Thank you freedom. Will Eagle point and/or central point get us out of the gloom? Also, are you aware of the schools in those areas? i would love a new home but I have found that most of the time new homes are stacked on top of eachother. At least thats how it is here since they need to make as much room for people as they can. Does the phoenix area have good lots that you are aware of? I actually would prefer to be on at least 1 acre but I know I will never find that unless we go far out. The problem with that is my husband is more city and I am more country. So we are looking for something in between that we can agree on. Thanks again.

This is my first time using this forum, but thought you might look into moving to Bend area. I moved here 2 years ago from florida, and have traveled throughout Oregon and see no other place I would want to live. I have become good friends with someone from Grants Pass (born and raised) and he and his wife are college educated with young kids and say nothing good about growing up in G.P.,except the outdoor life. They claim it is racist (White City?) and has zero diversity. I would look up the Redmond,Bend area for a place that is more diversified has a lot more to offer and the weather is unbelievale 300 days of sunshine. This area has the high desert and snow capped mountains all out your front door.

Thank you flordia transplant and of course freedom. I was under the impression that Bend gets a lot of snow and rain. How far north is Bend form medford area? We live in sacramento right now and we get about the same amount of rain as Medford. I wouldn't mind a little snow but nothing crazy.

Their claims are not everyones experience. All of the Asians, Blacks, Hispanic, Italian, and Irish that I know here are very happy to be here, and the racism charge was real oh.... about 40 yrs. ago. Not even a issue today.
The only person I could say I really don't care for in this community is from East Germany, and it's not because he's German, its because he stops growth and costs builders and developers a fortune in time and aggravation.

Some people, (maybe your friends) never get around to updating their information......

I like Bend and Redmond but don't think they are great examples of diversity.
In fact way less diverse than the Rogue Valley....

not sure about grants pass, but i know that here in medford blacks and mexicans still receive the occasional discrimination . i don't think it's necessarily because of their race, but rather, a combination of things. I know that a small number of an already small blk youth community have recently been castigated for what some call "gang activity" (bloods to the south and crips to the north). the mexicans also have their street gangs as well; cp mafia, sureno ect. Although most people of those ethnic backgrounds ARE NOT involved with gangs/crime in any way shape or form, the small number that have migrated and are a part of it seem to have alot of influence. the valley is still in a process of growth, and many old timers refuse to accept the fact that southern oregon isn't the quiet little hick region it used to be. this frusteration can sometimes turn to discrimination against a group of people they see as trouble makers, i.e a perception that all blks and mexicans are involved with gangs and crime just because of a few bad apples. I know it sounds crazy, but I've seen it first hand. I'm afraid Medford may still be a few years away from "progressive" status...

Default MH Parks

When we move, we will not be able to afford the $300,000 and up homes - I will be retireing and we figure we will each have enough to buy a manufactured home ($60,000). We would really like some info on MH parks in Medford and surronding areas- all the way up to Eugene. We especally would like to know which ones to stay away from! We are taking a trip there in late October. We want a safe park where my little Granddaughter can play outside with lots of other kids. Thanks in advance to all that answer.

I am not very knowledgable on the MH parks in Medford, but I do know of one, on Jacksonville Highway between Medford and J-ville that is very nice. My best friend's dad used to live there and the people were mild and friendly (lots of retired ladies) and there was a swimming pool. When you go there in Oct. Get yourself onto Jacksonville Highway heading from Medford to Jacksonville - the park is on the left hand side. (actually, I think there are several on that road for you to look at). You will definitely be able to find what you are looking for in Medford. I just say a cute two bedroom MH for only $20k - so a larger one should be in your 60k budget.

GOOD LUCK, and Welcome to Oregon!~

Look at the rest of the State of Oregon!!!!

I have lived in all parts of the State of Oregon and have many friends across the Oregon. Southern Oregon is the last place in Oregon that I would ever move back to. Please take a look at other parts of the state, Oregon is vast and has much vareity. Two African Americans I know encountered some racism in Grants Pass including one person who told him that 'we don't like your kind here'. I had my job threatened because my some of my co-workers complained that I was not relegious enough and it made them feel uncomfortable. The only think that I was quilty of was keeping my religous views to myself and not participating in any work prayer sessions. Also, Southern Oregon is the anti-tax, anti-government, neo-conservative and neo-Christian capitol of Oregon, hence they have to close down and/or seriously cut back their libraries and law enforcement. I worked on behalf of one of the library levies, going door to door to talk to folks about the need to fund and support them and numerous folks mentioned to me during that process that they do not support public libraries becuase they are just for 'Mexicans, illiegals and poor people'. I'm middle class and I visit the library all the time. Southern Oregon has two seasons....WET and HOT as spring lasts about one month then it dries out and bakes at between 90-105 degrees all summer from the end of May thru September and winter has much ground fog and is just as wet as Portland and the Willamette Valley, maybe 2-3 inches per year less, but very similar winter weather. With the exception of Ontario and Southeast Oregon, I would take any other part of the state over Southern and Southwest Oregon.
