My husband is finishing air traffic control school and in February we will be moving to wherever he will be working. He's been asked to choose where he wants to be and that's probably where the FAA will send him. We've had our hearts set on Eugene but recently saw Colorado Springs as an option as well. Now we're having a really hard time deciding between the two. We've lived in MI, FL, CA, and now in TX. We're really looking forward to being permanent finally! Can anyone helps us with this decision by giving us as much info on Eugene as possible? We have two kids, 6 and 3, and so family oriented communities and good schools is a big plus. We'd like to be able to own a house with decent space as well. We have lots of possitives on Colorado Springs and would like opinions on Eugene as well. Anyone been to both?

Have you considered Medford? The Airport is currently going through a large expansion.
The Grants pass paper had a front page article explaining the time frame, they are 3 yrs. into it.
New terminal, tower, parking. I think it will handle more flights than Eugene when completed if my memory serves me....

Thank you! I'll check Medford out too. I know the airports are rated according to how much traffic they handle. My husband's gone through and found the airports rated high enough to give the pay we need to not be struggling to buy a gallon of milk any longer! LOL! Thank goodness those days are coming to an end!

Hello!!!

I have lived in both places. I was born and raised in Colorado Springs and went to Law School at the U of O in Eugene.

I like both places, but would pick Eugene over Colorado Springs, but I have not been to Colorado Springs since 1999 as my parents no longer live there. Eugene has much more of a smalltown feel to it than Colorado Springs. The entire Front Range of Colorado has and continues to see an incredible amount of sprawling development, which is the primary reason my parents left because 'the springs' was not what it used to be with subdivisions as far as the eye can see. My mom and dad also grew tiresome of the dominating influence that both the Military (Air Force Academy and Ft. Carson) and Christian Fundamentalists (Focus on Family and Dozens of neo-con big box churches) and wanted to spend their retirement in a more free-thinking and progressive environment (they retired to Flagstaff, AZ in 2000). Speaking of progressive, Eugene is full of wonderful, thoughtful and progressive individuals and organizations and crime is not much of an issue there. They have a great parks system and water front along the river along with great farmers markets, resturants, etc. People in Eugene are passionate about education from gradeschool to college and there are many great kids educational programs in Eugene. Eugene is very pro-family and IMO a good and stimulating environment to raise kids. I remember at one time that the Eugene school districts had the highest percentage of students attend a 4-year college, not sure if that is still the case, but it was approx. 10-12 years ago. Also, in general, people in Eugene are very health conscious and environmentally aware, active and proactive. The ONLY reason that I don't live there anymore is that I grew tired of the rain and my personal issues with grass allergies as grass seed is the biggest crop grown within Lane County. But some people are not affected by it at all, it is a case by case circumstance. As with most places out west, real estate is not cheap in either Eugene or Colorado Springs, but from what my brother says (he lives in Denver and his wife sells real estate) any acerage property from Colorado Springs north to Ft. Collins will cost you a bundle. You do not want to live south of the Colorado Springs city limits, the crime is BAD and the schools are iffy. IMO, acerage in Eugene and Lane County is a bit cheaper than Colorado Springs and El Paso County. The flipside is that homes within the city limits of Eugene are a little bit more expensive that homes within the city limits of Colorado Springs. Whereas Colorado Springs has sprawled to such a degree that it hardly resembles the city and area of my youth, Eugene has grown much more responsible with better growth planning and control and has not changed or sprawled in an out of control or haphazard manner as it still very much resembles the town and area from my law school days.
